It always happens when I am in the middle of gaming or just surfing. My wife turns her lappy on, then mine disconnects for some reason. We both have the Intel G cards and have the Linkysys Wireless G 2.4gh router with Comcast broadband.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thx

Check if you have set the local IP of both computers to same address.

Make sure both computers are set to receive IP addresses and other data automatically via DHCP, and that the router is set up with DHCP enabled, and that the range of permissible IP addresses the router can hand out is greater than 1 (at least 2, in this case :D). Also, how old is the router?

Thank you both for the replies...

    The router is ~1.5yrs old.

So how do I "set to receive IP addresses thru DHCP?

How to set DHCP in your computer :
Windows_XP : Control Panel > Network Connections > Select the active network adapter (Wireless or Wired) > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Set Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically
Windows_Vista : Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage network connections > Select the active network adapter (Wireless or Wired) > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) > Properties > Set Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically

How to set up your router:
Most routers have DHCP enabled by default. There should be a setting to enable/disable DHCP somewhere in the router settings, normally it is under the basic setup section for Linksys routers.

Hi Snesley, It happens because of ip problems, check your ip status in both of your computers,,

Well, I checked all the settings and made sure IP's and DNS's connected automatically, and also checked that my router was set up properly to handle up to 50 wireless connections (actually think it will only handle 4) but still am having problems.
However, after you all pointed me to the right setting area, I just decided to check "ipconfig/all" and looked at my IP Configs and just manually assign ip addresses to my primary lappy, 2ndary, and wifes lappy. 192.....1,2, and 3. This seemed to fix the problem. I'm not sure why I get disconnected the other way but all is good I guess.

+1 to shyster and phoenix :)

Well...I couldn't let it be the way it was. I had to investigate. Further research led me to a firmware update on the website. Fixed everything!
    Hope this helps somebody.

    Thx again guys!

The Linkysys WRT54G.... The release notes on my version listed a ton of corrections including my original problem! If you do update yours, double check the "version" on the bottom of the router.

Hmm...wow...some weeks ago I went on the website looking for updates for that same Router and I couldn't even find the Router on the site (I thought they stopped supporting it)...now they have firmwares listed for it too...I guess they were updating the site when I checked...either way thanks Snesly for bringing this topic up.
