I can't seem to host a gears of war server no matter what I do. In the manual there are no ports that I can forwarded. I have forward the GFW ports. Either my ports that i have forwarded don't work because its Fail router or I don't have all the ports. So can you guys list the ports I need to forward(checked port forwarding site no gears there)

#2: When port forwarding is best to port forward the ports to the router or IP whats the difference between them and whats are the benefits for each.

#3 Is there a website that shows you if your ports been forwarded because in this case I port forwarded the 2 ports I am suppose to but I'm not sure if those ports got forwarded or not or if they did I need to forward more ports in order to host.

    My router aka crap

    Thanks -

If you've got a newer router (either a later model G or an N or Dual-Band N) the port data for GOW might already be entered into the Router in the QoS (Quality of Service) settings area. For example, on Linksys routers QoS is in Applications and Gaming section of the Router Admin panel - all you need to do is to activate the port forwarding data for the game or enter it as a new game and then add the port data and enable the Priority Service, which gives that game data priority access to the router.

Keep in mind also that you usually need more than just the Port data for the game itself - usually there are several other ports/port ranges necessary for online gaming.

If you have trouble with Port Forwarding (like I do) then switch to Port Triggering, which works a little different and will give you better results.
As far as the ports/port ranges you need to enter, all you need to do is to email the GOW game publisher and ask them for the data - usually what you get from them is a lot better than what you'll find around the 'net, and you can be sure it will work for the game.

I'm not sure what Redirect selected protocol/service to this router does (I haven't seen that type of an option in other routers), but you should select Redirect select protocol/service to IP Address and give the correct LAN IP of your computer. Type ipconfig at the command prompt to find out the correct IP. When using port forwarding it is better to assign a static IP to your network adapter (otherwise there is no guarantee that the next time you restart the computer you will get the same IP, however in a single PC environment you usually get the same IP even with DHCP).

You can test with this site. However you need to have the game running and listening; just the port forwarding rule cannot be tested without a listening service running on that port.

Have you checked to see that your ISP is not blocking the ports you need. Some do, most block ports to prevent users from running web services on residential service.

ww.grc.com and use there shieldsup to check your ports. Here is another network utility to see what is open http://www.networkactiv.com/Scanner.html

Make sure UPnP is enabled and forward ports 88, 2074, and 3074 for both UDP and TCPIP. Enabling UPnP should automatically forward port 3074, but check just to be sure.

You have a firewall? Make sure the ports you need are in the exception list. You can test your ports with http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=***** just remove the asterisks and type your port. No idea how reliable is this though.
