    Hi folks!
Sorry if this might sound stupid as I'm not particularly well-versed on computers - say if I want to play games like Red Alert 2 with my laptop and my brothers, what's the easiest and fastest way (speed-wise) to connect the 2 machines?

I've just read in previous threads that I can create an ad-hoc wireless network for that purpose, but can I like plug an ethernet cable into both laptops with each end thus creating a LAN network just between the 2 laptops, which I assume is faster and more secure?

Thanks for any thoughts you could share.

An ad-hoc network should work fine but if you really want to connect them through a cable, you need a cat5 crossover ethernet cable, which is likely different to the cables you might have. The pins on one end of the cable are reversed so that connected devices can send and receive data from eachother, i think
