    Hi all,

Just got new cable internet, hooked up to a old Linksys WRK54G router.

Problem is everytime I watch a Youtbue video it buffers and then stops and I have to skip back in the video for it to resume buffering. At first I thought this problem was limited to flash videos but I found that when I was downloading programs I had the same problem. I would have to pause the download after a few megabytes then resume over and over for just a 50mb file. Same for rapidshare files. Help

Do you happen to know what speeds you're suppose to be getting...like what are you paying for?

Also, you said the router is old. Have you updated the firmware in it?

No I don't know what speeds. I tried to find firmware for it but I can't find any. Cisco doesn't seem to support it anymore or they never had an update.

Doesn't work. It's not the same model # and I tried it with the version I have just in case but it keeps saying "Update Failed"

What frequancy are you running on a, b, g or n? Since you said the router is old I doubt that it supports N, I wonder about G though. If it doesn't even support G, it's time for a new router. Also, what wireless card are you using?

    Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter

I don't know about how to check which frequency how do you do that? I know I picked Channel 11 (2.462ghz) on the router.

Your running on "G" as that is what that router is designed for. Do you have an extra internet cable around so that you may plug the computer directly into the router and then do the same speedtest as before? I want to see how much of a difference you have between wireless and lan.

I don't have an extra cable. What about plugging directly into the modem?

Plugged into the modem: 34.23 down and 4.13 up.

I saw your edited post and was able to update the firmware.

Still having the same problems and I checked on a different machine just in case it was my laptop. I forgot to check if these problems occur if plugged directly into the modem. I'll do that shortly. If that isn't the case then I guess it would be time for a new router. Would you have any suggestions as to a decent cheap one? Also if I did get a new router would I get all of the speed from the modem? Cause it seems like this one is limiting my bandwidth quite a bit.

If there is even a remote chance of interference on the 2.4GHz band (and trust me there is unless you live alone on a deserted island), yes your current router is limiting you. You'll need a wireless N router (and wireless N compatible devices), which one we suggest will depend on your budget and your current wireless adapter(s) in your computer(s).

An upgrade to newer modem would help. You need something with 5Ghz to take full advantage. Check to see if your wireless card can do 5Ghz.
