    Frustrated need help Linksys E4200 and wifi 6300

    Hi all

    I need some help/advice.

    I have a linksys E4200 router and an Intel Wifi 6300 mini card installed in my laptop with a three wire antenna.

    I am having trouble getting any sort of decent connection speed over my 5ghz band. The router is less than 90 feet from where I am sitting but upstairs in my office. I have it elevated 6 feet off the ground.

    I need someone to suggest the best wireless settings for both the router and the wifi card. Right now I am barely getting 27 mbps

    when I am 5 to 10 feet from the router, 400 to 450mbps of blazing speed.

    90 feet is actually quite for 5GHz range and especially that you are not on the same level as the router.
    You're not going to get 450mbps unless you are close to the router. In your case to maximize performance you should switch to 2.4GHz band which (while not being capable of 450mbps on E4200) offers a very good range so you should bet far better speed.

    By my calculations (which is just an educated guess) if you are getting 27mbps on 5GHz you should be able to get between 50-60mbps on 2.4GHz in the same place.

    I guess reading the reviews others talk about 25 meters and getting almost the same performance. So having said that, I will look at 2.4 but again what is the most optimal settings for each. I have heard that you need to use channel 6 and 20mhz for the 2.4 ghz band.

    Just trying to get the optimal settings.

    Stinks that in order to get the best speeds you have to practically sit on top of the router. All marketing hype I guess

    You don't have to be on top of the router- you just have to configure it properly and use bands in a way that allows you to maximize speed.

    5GHz band is free of interference, doesn't offer very good range and in case of E4200 offers 450mbps speed. That should be used by clients that are close to the router and require high throughput.

    On the other hand 2.4GHz band is a bit clogged these days a lot of devices (not only Wi-Fi ones using it). E4200 offers superb 2.4GHz range so this should be used by clients that are relatively far from the router.

    Best channels are non-overlapping ones- in Americas it's 1,6 and 11. You can use inSSIDer to measure signal quality and survey for neighboring networks.
    As for 20MHz vs 40MHz channel width. 40MHz is faster unless signal quality is poor- in such a case 20MHz can be faster than 40MHz.

    You should choose a channel- preferably one of the non-overlapping ones that no one else is using and measure throughput at both 20MHz and 40MHz width. It won't take long and will be worth it.

    well you were certainly right and most helpful. I guess I thought the 5ghz was the holy grail over longer distances. Adjusting my 2.4 I am getting speeds that I couldnt even come close to with the 5ghz unless I was in the same room. This test is in our bedroom which is even further away on the first floor. I am happy !!!!!
