I have the Linksys WRT160n router, and every so often it will freeze up, and I wont be able to connect to the internet, with wire or wirelessly.

maybe its just some settings, but it does get very annoying...

Are you certain the router is actually "freezing up"? Do you have more than one computer connected to the router, and does it happen to all computers? Have you loaded any custom firmware? Have you reset the router to default settings?

I have 3 computers connected, 2 wireless, 1 wired. I also have an Xbox connected wirelessly. When the router stops working, all devices can't connect.

I've also downloaded the most recent firmware from the company.

Have you reset the router (done a hard reset)?

I've unplugged and replugged it, which solves my problem till the next freeze, but not pressed the reset button. I'll try that

You need to do the following steps for a hard reset:

    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).

Thanks, I'll try it, but how would this help?

This clears out all settings and restores the router to factory settings. Often, this procedure can "fix" a router.

my new Dlink DIR-655 used to do this but I found out it was a heat issue. When the unit was placed flat horizontally on my desk it was very hot (probably due to lack of air flow and poorly designed vents) but now that i use the included vertical stand, the unit runs very cool and the freezing has never happened again.

it can also be down to natting if you are d/l alot, playing games or hosting a site such as direct connect. Lynksys advised me that if i did any of the following i really needed to get a corporate router to handle large amounts of contiunouse data, they then advised me ont he correct CIsco router to buy............Lynksys seem to churn out rubbish routers if they cant handle a little natting, so i just changed it for a netgear and the problem never came back :)

Its could be the sym connections that the router can't handle. Heat has always been an issue with residential routers. I'm old school, wired SMB class router with seperate AP's and the use of larger managed switches to expand. With my setup you can hammer it for 24/7 and never have a problem.

Too bad we can't all afford your setup, blue! Any time you feel the need to upgrade, I'd take your old stuff off your hands. :)
