Im trying to set up a network between one pc that is wired directly to my router and one laptop that conects wirelesly to the router. Ive tried to set it up using the wizard thing in windows xp however it does not work for my desktop it simply tells me that i can not do it. What am i missing here is there some other way to go about this? I do have the internet working on my laptop.

Im 100% sure its your firewalls blocking it. Make sure you disable all of them and see if its the problem. The Windows XP one can be disabled by going in network connections (from the start menu, then connect to), then click on windows firewall and make sure it is disabled. Do this on both computers.

    Shift,

Do you have an exact error message that pops up (this goes a long way to troubleshooting an issue)?

I recently had a situation where I could not access another computer. It turns out the accounts that ere being used did not have a password. For sharing to work, both accounts must have passwords set.

Nick's suggestion of the firewall is also valid. By default, XP will enable the firewall, so try disabling it and see if that helps as well.

well his suggestion worked but im wondering how i can change my norton firewall so that this doesnt need to be turned off all the time. also if i turn them both off it will conect and then i can turn them back on with no problems which seems strange. Is there any way to use the printer without the computer being on too its rather slow to start and kind of defeats the purpose of sharing a printer in my situation?

You need a print server for that. Some routers come with print servers, and there are also separate print servers that connect to routers, and then the printer is connected to the server.

True. Besides, there are downsides to print servers. Like, not everything always works properly, and if you got an all-in-one, you cannot use the scanner via the print server most of the time.
