I have a Thinkpad X200 XP SP3 that I am trying to share files with on my home network woth other XP machines. I can see the laptop in Network Places but cannot access it. In Properties I noticed that the checkbox for File and Printer Sharing was not checked but checking it doesn't change anything and more importantly after rebooting the checkbox is unchecked again. If I try to manually install File and Print Sharing that option is not available and I can't seem to find the install files to use the Have Disk option to do a manaul install.

I have searched and can find a lot of File and Print Sharing issues but not this one. Does anyone have any ideas about what might have gone wrong or can tell me how to install File and print Sharing if it doesn't currently show up in the installation dialog box?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Make sure you have access with the firewall. FW can and will block access if not properly set.

Thanks...is it possible for File and Print Sharing to work properly even if the checkbox in the properties page is not checked? If the box needs to be checked it would seem that would be the real problem and that's what I'm having trouble with...I can't install File and Print Sharing...it acts like there is no driver/protocol/service software on the machine to install. I'm probably not saying that just right but you can probably understand it well enough...On every other PC that I have ever worked on when it came time to configure the network I would check the File and Printer Sharing box and the system would actually install whatever it needed and the checkbox stayed checked. That is not happening and I think that is the root cause of the problem. The question becomes how do I install File and print Sharing if the required software is not on the machine...where on the installation CD is it hiding...if I can find it I can probably do a manual install.

No, You need those services for it to work.

Go to add/remove application, select windows install and re install the services. If you do not have admin rights you will need that to do installs and make changes to system parameters.
