So... I have an issue of slow transfer rates between my laptop and desktop through the network.

I have setup the desktop with an extra internal HD and use that basically as a NAS (network attached storage). I use a linksys WRT54G as a router. The desktop is hard wired to the router while the laptop is wireless. The interal extra drive is setup using Microsoft as a shared drive. Any recommendations in increasing the transfer speed.

How slow is slow? Are you using a, b, or g?

Hardwire the laptop to the router.

Yes as WackyT suggest hardwire your notebook to the router for the fastest transfer of data, this will out do a,b or g.

I get 2.0-2.2 MB/sec to and from my wireless laptop and wired desktop. The router is an old D-link DI-624 running 802.11g. The speeds are pretty respectable as far as I've read for a first generation G type router.

If you're getting around 2-3 MB/second typical transfer speeds from your router at close wireless range and you still want more... As WackyT and others suggested, hardwiring your laptop would work. Also you could check out Wireless N (Draft), which is supposedly 10x faster than the wireless G but I've never used it before.

Well, I guess i am in line with you. I transferred a 380 meg file in 150 sec. This is 2.5 MB/s. I just thought the transfer rates would be faster. Thanks for your help

Wouldn't the hard drives be the bottleneck?
