I've just purchased a laptop and wireless router to share an internet connection with my desktop. The wireless setup went smoothly and both systems are accessing the internet without issue (with WPA enabled).

On the file sharing side however, both systems can "see" each other on the network but only the Desktop can share files with the Laptop. Everytime I'm on the Laptop and try to access the Desktop, I get a "Permission Denied blah, blah, blah" error. (And yes I have set certain folders on both systems to "Shared").

I don't have any firewalls running, though even with Windows Firewall enabled on both machines, there was no problem with the Desktop sharing with the Laptop, just not the other way around.

Anybody got some brilliant ideas on this one? ( I have searched the forums and there doesn't seem to be onyone with this exact problem).

I belive it is through windows, (microsoft does dumb things) that you are unable to access the folder. I am gonna assume that these folders are the WINDOWS and PROGRAM FILES folders. I am having this problem too, but im pretty sure these were secruity risks that microsoft did not want so blocked them. If anybody does know the solution please post!

go into your network connections, and right click on the network card being used and click on properties. In the window on the first tab, make sure that the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" box is checked, if that isn't checked for the card being used, then your laptop will not be able to share files to other workgroup computers, but would still recieve files (i think). windows firewall shouldnt be affecting it. So try checking those boxes, and if all else fails, search the microsoft website.

Yep, "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" box is checked. Wish it were that easy. I've checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base and am no closer to understanding what the problem is.

The actual message I get when I try to access the "Desktop" icon in My Network Places is:

"\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
    Access is denied.

the only other thing i can think of is if the shortcut is corrupted, and no longer points to the right place. try going through the "view workgroup computers" choice on the left of the my network places folder and accessing it there. luck.

Actually, I went to the Microsoft WinXP newsgroup and their advice:

"If both systems are XP, on the Desktop, do the following:

Click Start, click Run, type REGEDIT (hit enter)
    go to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLSA

Look for "RestrictAnonymous" and ensure it is set to 0."

did the trick. I can now access files either way from both the Laptop and the Desktop.
