I have not been able to share files and printer between my laptop (Windows Vista) and desktop (Windows XP). Can someone please give me some suggestions? I contacted Bellsouth (Wireless Networking) and they forwarded me to HP. Talked with an Tech Specialist at HP and they wanted to charge me to help  .

    Thanks in Advance

I have the same problem... I have a home network with a router (Linksys), two PC running XP Home with Service Pack 2 and my new laptop (VAIO SZ) running Windows Vista Business. I can see my all computers on the network, but cannot share files and printer. Thank you.

I think as far as the Vista goes you may have to go into either network settings or right-click properties of "My Computer" and define if that laptop can been seen and files shared with other laptops in same workgroup ie network.

Probably the same for the XP one.

Have you checked your security settings? The builtin FW will block your subnet, unless you put it in a safe zone.

XP an Vista Default to different domains, so one of them needs to be changed. I recommend changing them both.

Can you further explain the security settings please?

As for the domains I already changed it. As I said before, I can see other computers, just not access them.

    Thank You

Check you firewall settings. In most cases you need to allow the subnet you are work in as a friendly zone. Most routers def to 192.169.1.x, 255.255.255.0 . So you need to tell it everything from this zone is safe and allow traffic. On the XP pc if it's pro you need to change the simple file sharing setting. Sorry I do not know vista. But to me it sounds like a firewall bocking.

Set up a password on both computers. Have the same user and password. Also make sure the two computers are in the same workgroup. If that works you can try without the password. Its possible to just do an open sharing however its pretty complicated. If you dont mind typing in a password at log on then I would just leave it that way.

I had the same type of problem with my G1 and exsisting network. I solved it by formatting G1 and installing XP Pro. Nothing that I tried would work consistantly.

I had this issue earlier, what was happening to me was the computers were visable on the network however I could not access some files, although others could. I would get a permission error saying I wasnt granted permission. The problem was the files I wasnt allowed to access were on a different partition and once I moved them to the C:/, I was able to access them. Like someone said before, specify in the security settings of the shared folder what the 'safe zones' are.

i had the same problem before. what i did was i went to the control panel>network of my desktop computer and click the 'set-up wireless network wizard' on the left panel. i just followed the instructions from the wizard and it worked for me. u will need a jumpdrive for configuration of the laptop. my only problem i have is that i cannot access the printer from my laptop. the file sharing is fine except for the printer.
