    Hi
I had this same problem earlier in thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=102418

Now that was thru wireless lan, so I decided to get an ethernet cable and wire my computers together....

So now, after wiring them together, my laptop can access the internet, which I was able to do wirelessly too , however again I am unable to use file sharing...

I'll try my best to outline what little I have tried.....(followed the basic microsoft guide)

    1.Setup the home connection
2.Both my computers are on the same workgroup, and have distinct names
3.File sharing is installed on both the computers

Now my router which I am using ( Linksys wrt54g ) has a ping application in its config setup, which I used to ping my desktop, which had 0 packet loss....
However when I tried to ping my laptop , the request kept getting timed out and 100% packet loss....

I am not sure what all I need to add to this post, however if you do require any info, please ask me specifically?

    Please help!!!

    Thanks

    and the woe continues ....

If you are using Vista.Make sure you use lastest driver and firmware.
Also, there are some encryption settings on your connection.Like entering password.Make sure you set them up properly.

    Thank you for your replies

    Ok then...

1.Windows firewall has been disabled on both the computer

    2. using windows xp media centre edition on both...(which i believe is built on Xp home? )
Also password was required for the wireless(WEP encryption) which I had entered correctly
In wired I did not encounter a password.....

    so there you have it.....

any other info that might help you diagonise?

    Thanks

Gotta agree with zx10guy. I have Windows Firewall running on all my systems in a workgroup environment, and have never had any problems with folder or printer sharing.

    thanks for the inputs guys....
tried all you said and still wasn't working.....

and WackyT had earlier tried to solve this problem, but maybe cos I wasn't explaining correctly or it was a freak error , couldn't find my problem.....

so I jus got tired of it all and reinstalled EVERYTHING ....and now it works, dunno why thou :p

nehow all I did was what I had done earlier and now it works, both wired and wireless.... would be nice to know what was really the problem

However the bottom line is : All's well that End's well!

    Thanks

    aaah

I feel so stupid..... I discovered the problem..... it was Norton
had just reinstalled it and LAN stopped working now ....disabled it and voila! it works again....

So here's my Noob lesson of the day ...the learning continues.....

    Thanks

P.S uh what config do I have to do now in order for both Norton and the LAN to work together?

I have learned through the years that the only Symantec product that has any worth what-so-ever is Ghost. Everything else from them I catagorize as viruses, and wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.
