I have a wireless laptop connected to a 802.11g wireless router and a desktop wired also to that router. Laptop is running home xp while desktop is running pro.

I have tried the Xp home networking wizard but I'm still unable to transfer anything between the two unless I use firewire. So how can I share files without the firewire?

In short, make sure they are in the same ip network, have the same netbios name, enable file sharing service, add username/password for the other machine and set certain directory to share.

Both have same ip network, and file sharing already enabled. Not sure about netbios name though. Same as workgroup? As for the username/password, what machine would that be?
Also I can't seem to ping either machines internal ip address

OK, step one is to get IP connectivity established. Then we can worry about file transfers. So, to start...

Can each of your machines access the internet via your router? I am assuming it is connected to a broadband source but otherwise, can each ping the router? If either of the machines cannot get to the router, then obviously that link has the problem and needs to be investigated.

If both have internet connectivity but they cannot ping one another, then we start going into the types of things freeman is discussing. We start by making sure they are on the same IP network. If you are not 100% sure of what that means, then please let us know the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for each machine. You get the info by going to Start / Run and type "cmd" to open a DOS window and then type "ipconfig".

Netbios doesn't impact pings at all, so don't worry about it right now. The workgroup names should be the same for file sharing, but that doesn't impact the ability to ping so I'm not worried about that yet either. I agree with the rest of freeman's advice, but we aren't there yet. We need to get a ping between the machines before we worry about any of that other stuff.

Anyway, confirm that each machine has connectivity to the internet or at least to the router and either give us the IP address info or confirm that you are absolutely sure that the machines are on the same IP network and that we don't have an address masking problem. If all of that looks solid, try pings from each machine to the other and confirm that it doesn't work in either direction. Once we confirm all fo that we can start thinking through the possibilities.

If you can ping now, but doesn't know how to configure the network. The lamest way is probably download an ftp server software and install it. the each pc can access each other files through FTP. Although this is not the best way to do network, but sometime problem occur like currupted windows registry, but ftp still works.

Well as it turned out, it was the firewall. I guess I didn't think of it because it worked with firewire, but then again firewire doesn't have anthing to do with internet [:I]. Everything seems to be fine now so thnx for the input
