    Hey

Whilst on holiday I attempted to connect my computer to another wireless network. When it didn't work I started messing about with the setting and must have done something wrong, as now that I am back home my laptop wont connect to my own network - claiming that there is a problem with the IP.
The laptop in questions is an XP Toshiba, and if anyone knew which steps to take in order to fix this problem I'd be really grateful.
    Thanks :)

On the dos console do this; ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew.

Did you check your IP configurations?
go to Start-> Run -> and type "cmd"
when the command prompt appears, type "ipconfig" to see your current IP status. If there is one, then type 'ipconfig /release', enter, and then 'ipconfig /renew'.
    Hope this helps

    Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Try reinstall the drivers to your wireless card.

Check your device manager and check that your wireless adapter is working properly, if it's not there then you need to re-install it.

I know this sounds really ignorant, but how do I do either of these things?

Press start, right click on my computer, select properties, and select device manager, then hardware, look for network adapter and see if your wireless adapter is working properly.

Were you able to do the ipconfig/release?

Says the device is working properly when I troubleshoot - and no neither the release or renew option brought anything useful with them.

Can you do this, again in the DOS console, type ipconfig and tell me what do you see regarding the wireless adapter, if you can post a pic of it would be much better.

A bit of a hassle doing that as I'll have to use a 3rd computer to upload pictures so easier to type it up. If you do really need to see it, I'll try and do so.
Basically if doing the ipconfig thing it says

    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State ..................................................... : Media disconnected

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-Specific DNS Suffix .:
    IP Adress ..............................: 0.0.0.0
    Subnet Mask ..........................: 0.0.0.0
    Default Gateway......................:

    that's basically it

In your router you should have DHCP enable to assign an IP address to the laptop. In the laptop make sure you have stated that you would receive an IP address automatically, you should have nothing in the space reserved for the IP and the DNS addresses.

Do you mind giving a step-by-step instruction of how to do this?

Cheers for your help so far.

Double click on the network icon, at the lower right corner of your screen. Then click on properties, the scroll down until you find the TCP/IP option, selc it and do what I said before.
