will any external hard drive work with the ASUS RT-N56U router? and what is the advantage of hooking it up to a router? is it constantly backing up as you work in your laptop? what about the data I already have on my western digital?
    Thanks for the answers

The benefit is you get to use it as a NAS - Network Attached Storage. It provides access to your files from any computer and a central location to store music and photos so you don't have duplicates on several different computers. You can also setup your system to backup to that drive daily/weekly/etc so that incase you loose your laptop you don't loose your most important files.

In some cases you can set it up and connect from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

The down side of these are that they are very slow, when compared to a standalone NAS.
