    Hi,

I'm looking for something which will let me have one ethernet cable going to the room and then slit it into 8 or so for each of my computers. I should really like it to look really techy with cables all over the place but I suppose looks don't really effect performance so any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Matt. I

What you need is a 8 port switch. If you have a gige port feeding it you will be fine with no bottle necks for 10/100 speed. Personally I would buy a GigE switch that supports Jumbo frames. These have gotten to be about the same price as 100mbps switches. The GigE will boost performace between all of your equipment connected to it. If you actually have a needed for all 8 ports it will be to small, so go ahead and get a 16 port, there is always something else that needs connected.

&blue68f100: Thanks very much for this post also. It's in a different location to the place I need the server.

So I'll get an 8 port GigE switch that supports Jumbo frames. Any chance you could please have another look at the server thread - thanks very much for your help in this matter and the other.

Netgear makes good products, It's not a product that is going to require any tech support on. Netgear only gives 90day free phone support.

I like the dlink switch a little better due to it's packaging, metal case.
