I'm at school with my laptop plugged into ethernet. I'm having trouble because every time my computer sleeps or I close the lid, it automatically disconnects which makes downloading anything difficult. I figure its to save power but I can't figure out how to change it. I'm running Win7 Ultimate. Thanks to anyone that can help.

Your computer can't download stuff while sleeping. You can change the settings via the Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings

control panel>network and internet,View network status and tasks>change adapter settings>local area connection>right click ,properties>configure>Power managment, and untick the Box that says "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

It's much easier than it looks.

So don't close the lid. If you don't like the monitor being on, adjust your power setting to shut the screen and backlighting off AND to keep the machine powered up when running on AC power. It's not hard.......

It's NOT a good idea to try and run a laptop with the screen closed. A lot of machines depend on being able to transfer heat upwards through the keyboard in addition to the usual fan/airflow you're probably familiar with.

Simple fix. Along with doing what thundernet mentioned in post #3 to keep the NIC on; Do the Power Options tweak as well. See attached images.
