Hi so ive just moved into University on Saturday and we have 4 ethernet sockets on the wall for the internet.

Ive got a spare router which is pretty old ( This one) And the input is a ADSL cable.

How can i convert the ethernet i have in my wall to ADSL to fit the router?

Or am i totally wrong in thinking this is possible and maybe it cant even be done or there is no way to get around it?

Any help would really be appreciated as I miss having no wires!!

    Thanks in advance
    Ash

Usually it's impossible- the same chip that works as an ADSL modem is also responsible for routing so it has to be an official firmware option to work.

The above is an example of how it could look like- if you uncheck "enable DSL port" it gets switched off and first Ethernet port starts working as a WAN port.
Don't get your hopes up though- this option is present on very few ADSL cobmos. You'll most likely have to buy a new router.

Hmm i cant see the option which of these would it be under?

    LAN Setup
    LAN Settings
    DHCP Client List
    Internet WAN
    Connection Type
    DNS
    Wireless
    Channel and SSID
    Security
    Firewall
    Application Gateways
    Virtual Servers
    Client IP Filters
    MAC Address Filtering
    DMZ
    WAN Ping Blocking
    Security Log
    Utilities
    Restart Router
    Restore Factory Default
    Save/Backup Settings
    Restore Previous Settings
    Firmware Update
    System Settings

    Thanks for the help!

Just incase it cant be done which im guessing it cant what sort of router would i need?

    Thanks a lot

If it's even there it's either in WAN or LAN part of the setup.
If you're looking at a new router it that's my current recommendation- TL-WR1043ND
Good set of features and reasonable price.

Yes- that's gonna work as a wired router. It has no wireless capability though-if you don't need wireless it's fine.

If you want both wireless ans wired that's probably something like this device
    TL-WR340G. It's more or less £20.

Which is not to say I'm recommending it- I have no idea what hardware does it use but judging by the price nothing good.
It's cheap and it's manufactured by a reputable company and is still supported (latest firmware was released in July 2011)- that's probably all you can hope for.

Yes you can. How reliable it turns out to be or what kind of wireless range you can hope for- I honestly don't know.

EDIT: If older hardware revisions are anything to go by it's based on Atheros hardware (used to be 180MHz) with 8MB RAM which is roughly 2003-2004 in terms of technology. If your internet connection isn't too fast it should do but if it's fast this router is going to struggle.

It's definitely not MB/s but Mb/s but are you sure that your upload speed is actually more than twice the download speed?
In any case- this router should be more or less OK for ~9Mb/s.
