I run a meat plant, and we use an electric smoke house. The smoke house is run from a computer program. The smoke house is connected to a hub, and the computer screen is also connected to the hub and communicates with the smoke house via ethernet. I have the software to load on laptop/handheld PC, my question is how can i access the on-baord computer via wireless.
My hope is that when Im on vacation, I can take a hand held pc with me and monitor the smoke house in case of a problem. I have a laptop on site, if I hook up a wireless router to the hub, would that allow me to run it via wireless on the laptop, and from there, how can I use the hand held?
If anyone is able to help that would be greatly appreciated, and if the description I've given is not clear, I would be happy to try and make it a bit more understandable.

Is the computer connected to the smokehouse accessible from the internet?
If so, read the following ongoing thread

With your software do you require only to connect to the existing network? If so you may want to look at a VPN connection. There are 2 type of VPN, port forwarding to connect to only 1 computer. Some home routers support this. The other option is a VPN Endpoint Router. With these you connect to the router and it will appear as you are at your desk in the office. These are pricey routers and get a good one if you go that way. Due to encryption it take a good CPU and ram to handle the tunnel(s). This type connection requires a good broadband service too, since you will be using the uplink to send large packets of info. So if you have a min of 1mbps uplink it will work fairly good, faster the better.
I use a Netgear FVS-338 VPN router to access my network when away from home. -
If this helps, would you do me a favor by sending some of that meat my way? -
easiest way I can see is to find a Linksys wrt-54GL router change the firmware to DD-WRT VPN edition and then enable pptp vpn tunnels.
