Are there any cons to having duplicate computer names on the network nowadays? I know it caused issues in the past, what about now? I'd like to add very generic computer names & randomized MACs on public/untrusted networks to my list of habits.

Other than windows *****ing at you when you boot up that duplicate exist. Also you'll need to do all communication between the computers via IP address and not the PC name. DNS will be all screwy....

@pathfindercod I never ever use hostnames to communicate, only IPs. All my Linux boards have the same name, no problems whatsoever; but on the other hand I am not sure how some of the Windows networking stuff works, and if generic name colliding with other device on say a public network could offer the owner of such device an additional attack vector on mine.
