And I am wanting to go down in internet speed. My 60mbps is a waste ($60/mo). Other than the occasional game download, I never use it all. I am looking to go to a cheaper plan that is maybe 20-30mbps. There is a company that pulled fiber to my place so I hope to move to them once my cable contract is up.

That's a bit too much $ for a service that everyone needs soon - streaming 4k HD HDR content is gonna really eat up the bandwidth.

Here in the US it's a bit cheaper, about $80/mo:

Yep, Digi as an ISP is ridiculous in Central Europe

I pay them here in Hungary ~ USD 15.5 for 1Gb/200Mb net access + around 100 unscrambled DVB-C channels (a lot of them HD) and a landline telephone... Unbelievable!

Why did they cap upload speeds to 100Mbps? I recently upgraded to 10MB down and 10MB upload for $13. Still comparing majority of users here, mine could/is the lowest. :(

the upload speeds are really low, they are usually 10 MBPS only, I have 20 MBPSs because my connection is 100 MBPS down, no where near the fast upload speeds in the US

Thanks for bringing this up guys. While I can't have 1Gbps Internet and quite frankly I don't need one (neither do most of you though), because you have mentioned this I went on and checked with my ISP and discovered that I can upgrade my 100mbps connection to 300mbps for additional $3.

Now, I don't need 300mbps connection either, but neither do I need those $3, so I might just upgrade for the hell of it - it will come handy once a week or so.

Anyway - since we're comparing prices in this thread as well I pay $14 for 100/10 and can get 300/10 for $17 (mind the upload speed though - it's still stuck at 10mbps even on 300mbps connection).

glad a random thread on the internet pertaining to internet in another country made you benefit and check with your ISP! Nice upgrade! yes you may not need it, but it heck is nice to download at super fast speeds when the time comes that you need to download or stream something :)

If you want cheap, fast, reliable broadband internet, move to either Eastern Europe (excluding Russia), or East Asia, including Singapore. We have 2 Gbps plans here for S$69.90 per month (US$50), and 10 Gbps plans for S$189 (US$130) per month. More typical speeds of 300, 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps are even cheaper.

Don't. If you think about it, it's unusable. How would you use a 10Gbps network (or even 2Gbps one) if vast majority of routers do not offer WAN port that is faster than 1Gbps. And even if they did offer WAN ports and LAN ports faster than 1 Gbps and you'd change your home network to cat 6 cable to support it, you'd still need Ethernet cards in your computers that would support more than 1Gbps.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that nothing on your home network supports speeds above 1Gbps - not the router, not the cables, not the computers.

So you'd have to buy all the 10Gbps hardware (which is expensive as hell BTW) and upgrade your computers and change the cables all to not-get 10Gbps because you'll never get that speed from any servers on the Internet anyway.

This is why you can buy that reasonably cheaply from some ISPs. I bet you anything they don't even have the capacity to deal with their own clients using that bandwidth, because they simply don't.

I got a letter last week, from Feb 7th onwards the fiber installed in my apartment is finally active and 1Gbit is an option.
For now I've been on 100Mbit for 9,90e/month. 1Gbit upgrade price still unknown.

Retail prices for those are 27,90e and 39,90e but as our condominium has made a deal with the operator, we get 10Mbit for free and 100Mbit for 9,90e. If 1Gbit is under 20e I might take it... just because it's possible.

that was dirt cheap for the speed, I pay 180 USD per month for 100MBPS Down / 20 MBPS Up here in Dubai but with a premium TV package / landline telephone

You people in the USA/Canada/Europe have awesome deals for internet and mobile phone plans

Speaking of Dubai, Virgin Mobile is coming to Dubai soon:

My operator provides TV/IPTV and cellphone services and even tries to bundle them in attractive package. I believe with certain TV packages prices can jump a lot but when they try to sell me those I just say I don't even own a TV... :p

It has to be said that not all is perfect in Eastern Europe (to the contrary I say) ;)

Yes, in Hungary the major telcos do have awesome packages, provided you live in the right area where you can actually subscribe to them... I moved 2 years ago from downtown Budapest (100/30 Mbit connection there) to a district that is considered a wealthy area. Imagine my surprise when I found out that only one ISP was available at my apartment complex, offering a ****ty ADSL service for scandalous prices. The fastest offering was 30/5 Mbit - that I could have lived with, but not a week went by without downtimes, some of which lasted days, and the real speed was closer to 10/1...

In the last decade or more, the one available ISP didn't invest a damn cent to upgrade their infrastructure, while they could charge what they wanted thanks to their quasi monopoly in the area. Fortunately it all changed when DIGI (ironically my ISP downtown) started to rapidly deploy fiber all throughout the district, offering Gigabit connections with FTTH technology at prices that are simply amazing (see my previous post in the thread). And what gives, the former monopoly actually also started to deploy fiber, but most people here just gives them the finger now :)

TL;DR: Yes, it's true that in CEU there are amazing connections for peanut money, but they are VERY far from being widely available. The vast majority has access to only paltry speeds.

Sorry guys for this long, slightly OT rant, I just felt I had to write this out :)

I don't disagree with what you say... Its shocking that the UK prides itself about having high broadband speeds but its almost impossible to get 1Gbps connections whereas it seems quite a few places in Central Europe offer them... Rural broadband is a joke here in the UK...

edit2: at the moment 1gbit price is shown as 39,90e/month and even 100mbit is twice the price I'm paying so they haven't yet been updated. At least I hope so.

I live close to central London so I'm quite lucky to have good internet... When I used to live in the countryside, broadband was 512kbps although eventually after doing some fixes in the house, it reached 6Mbps...

Upgraded to 1000Mbps... Operator promises 600+ speeds and upload seems to be capped at ~125Mbps.
Speedtest starts at 200+ upload so there is some bandwidth still unused.

Most speedtests are too short, speed is still climbing when they reach finish.
Now I have to find out why my network restricts speed to 100Mbit still.

I mean, I got this result when directly connected to the fiber. Wireless with my AC68u I get 200mbps+ and wired ~100Mbps. Annoying.

Edit: Found it! A bad cable between router and first switch limited speed to 100Mbit. It never mattered before.

$1360/month? At that price, you can get 1 Gbps internet in pretty much any country except those where some sort of armed conflict is happening on its soil. Heck, in most developed countries you can get 1 Gbps internet for a tenth of that price or less, so long as you live in the right city/neighborhood.

For a place that promotes itself as always being on the bleeding edge of modern technology, it's shocking how regressive the UAE is when it comes to the internet and telecommunications. The anti-VPN law immediately comes to mind as another example...
