I'm at college and I have my laptop hooked up through one of the multiple LAN lines within my room. Now, internet speed here is ok. I can switch between websites and wonloads videos pretty quickly. Yet, when I want to download something, say a large game demo, the speed sucks. Right now I'm getting 9.78kb/sec. Is this normal? Could it be my laptop? Why is it so slow. This is Dial-Up speed. Is there any way I can increase overall speed?

if you are downloading other stuff from yoru laptop and not having this problem then it is likely either a limitation imposed by the college to prevent large downloads by limiting certain speeds for websites OR it is the website itself that is slow due to many other ppl downloading and using up its speeds.

Like SideSwipe said, it could be due to limitations imposed by your college (but since you get fast speeds most of the time I guess it isn't that), or it can be the website itself is being slow.
If you're sharing the connection with lots of other people, it could be slowed down if other people are downloading things at the same time.

So to answer your questions: Since your using the college's Internet, seems pretty normal to me.
I highly doubt that it's your computer.

Edit: You probably should have posted this in the Networking & Wireless section.

Go to speedtest.net and run the test, what kind of speeds do you have?
