I keep having to pull my modem cable out and restart it cos whenever i download a few things at once or for a longtime it just crashes and keep having to do this and is annoying! Anyone else know why this is? Or is it normal when u download lots of bittorrent stuff at once?

    Anyway of fixing this? Thanks

download things one at a time, it pulls too much from the internet at once. they're stealing the bandwidth from each other, so download one at a time

it could be a bad router. a good one should not have any issues with this. I have downloaded about 25 big files at once with no problem. Sure, they all go real slow, but everything should keep on functioning.

It always works fine when i dont download too much stuff im talking like 4-6 files at once. U think i need to get a better wireless router? I think its my modem tho i could be wrong cos i hae to keep unplugging the modem and the wireless router.

    What modem do you have?

Try plugging the modem directly into your computer. Then download a bunch of files at once. If there is no problem, the modem is fine. It's probably the router.

Just found out it seems to be my router thats the problem cos when it crashed i just unplugged the router and plugged it back in without doing anything with the modem and it started back up again.

What do u look for in a good router? Any suggestions?

To password protect you need to access the router management page (usually type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar).

I think you should get a good linksys router. They have some good reviews on http://www.smallnetbuilder.com

i use the wrt54g. i have probably 100 of them deployed at my last job. it is the most popular and most sold wireless router.

sorry if you dont think it looks pleasing to the eye...maybe you can stick with your uber shiny red with flames paint job router that sucks? personally, i get what works good and is well priced.

i have had my connection for years with no problems until last month when it started disconnecting every 30 minutes and i had to unplug the modem to reset it for it to come back online

i tried bypassing the router and i also reinstalled windows cause i was messing with settings around the same time trying to get xp and vista to file share

after nothing worked i called my isp and told them i wanted the modem replaced, they came out a few weeks ago, swapped it out and it has worked fine since

guess i am trying to say it could be your modem

**oops didnt read all the posts, guess you already figured out it wasnt the modem

I don't like the WRT-54G v5+ model it nothing but junk. The wrt-54gl is ok, like the original unit. Your problems indicates it's over heating. Have seen this many times before. If you can still find the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 or the WHR-125G are good models. What ever you get see if there is aftermarket firmware. If so you will have a log more options and control, besides stability.

If you think your neighbor was tapping off of your wireless that will add a lot of heat. The reason I like seperate units.

I use a bussiness class router, you can hammer them 24/7.

I have a newer WRT54G which is a pretty decent router, but can be brought down to its knees. I plan on purchasing a dlink in the near future because the atheros chipset in my thinkpad will connect to a dlink at 108MBPS.

Proxim makes some serious routers as well, but they're so expensive!
