Well as you can see my notebook is in my signature. I have bought an Netgear Rangemax 108mps Cable router i know the laptop is wiresless built in but as i wont have it yet untill christhmas i cant find out if its worth buying an adapter.
The furtherist i shall be away from the router which is going to be in the atic will be in the living room which is well down 2 stairs.
Any ideas any one?

What kind of adapter would you be buying?

I presume that the question relates to buying a 108Mbs adapter for the notebook. I doubt if you will see any benefit unless the adapter has a good sized external antenna (and if your main use for the router is for the internet, I doubt if the uplink speed will be more than 8Mbs). Signal strength is the main factor determining the link speed. Most modern notebooks have a good sized antenna (or two) built into the display. The PC card / USB adapters have very small built-in antenna and, in my experience, have limited range.
You may want to experiment with the orientation of the antenna on the router to see if it affects signal strength and connection speed.

Since you bought a pre 11n router you will need to set it to 11g ONLY since you NB does not have the 11n card. You would have been better off with just a 11g router. There are still many many problems with all of the pre 11n hardware. NONE of them are on the 2.0 spec, all v1. And none are saying there hardware will work with v2.
As for card vs built-in. It all depends on the mfg of the built it. My raylink want even reach across a room with out dropping connections (ac on HI). So in my case the card is much better. Cover whole house, 50', 4 walls on LOW power.
But if you want to use 11n you will need to buy a matching card for your router. And hope their is no 11b/g hardware it can see. If so you just wasted $$$ with 11n, will cut back to 11g. -
Ok im new to network well nto new but dont know much about it, the laptop supports b/g which the router can do so what the hell is 11n?
Sorry im n00b to wireless netorking as my pc/360 are wired. -

11n is new spec that has a much larger bandwidth than 11g systems. And is suppose to have a greater range, currently ???.
Your router does not support it. I had miss read the model number. Yours does support the MIMO tech, which is channel bonding. This use 2 channels in turn making it full duplex. The problem with these is that some do not play well with other networks. It will be a good thing when ever they get the bugs out. Mfg are using the general public to do the beta testing and help pay for development cost.
If you are not using wireless I recommend turning the radio off, for security reason. If not you still need to set the WPA or WPA2 up ( pass phrase/ key) to keep others from leaching off your network. -
Ah okies i see so just another new technology devlopmeant basicly, Well to be fair my laptop nor router support 11n.
Looks like i will be best putting an order throught for an adapter i may add the USB rangemax to my order see how my pay is, Thanks for your help! much appricated
Seems as if the 11n is just filled with problems from what your telling me so glad i am not using it.
Do you think i should buy an adapter? [Help please]
