The Inspiron 1520 arrived, and I am wondering if I have to use my old disks for Bell Sympatico (my ISP) to install in the laptop in order to connect to the internet or will the router do that?

Not sure what you're asking. You laptop comes with built-in WiFi that seeks out all wireless signals.

You connect the router with the modem which is connected to the wall.

    Pretty much:

Wall -> Phone outlet -> dsl line -> modem -> ethernet wire -> router

And then you log into your router via a browser using the router IP(Usually 192.168.x.1 depending on your router brand) and you make a login/password for your router, wireless settings and enter the dsl login/password in the provided page that loads up once you enter your router.

Connect the modem to your router. Don't need to install anything from the disc from your ISP.

OP, are you sure you're using high-speed internet? If you're using dial-up, you have to have a different settings.

What I am basically asking is if I get a router, how will I connect to the internet on the laptop if I have no internet access on it to click and log on. I know this question is dumb.

You just connect to your router, either with an Ethernet cable, or with Wifi if it's a wireless router and you want to do it that way.

There's usually some sort of program running that will let you control the status of Wifi, or sometimes a physical switch to turn it on and off.

Since your using DSL (PPPOE) you will have to first connect to the router and set up your account info (username & password for your DSL account) this way, your router will now do the tasks of logging into Bell for you. Once your account info is set up, go into the main setup and change the default password. Next go into the wireless setup and setup the wireless. Search for howto on that. Once you set up the wireless you will be given a key. Turn on your laptop and open your wireless properties, you should see the wireless router, click connect and put your in key when prompted. Ok the wireless router is set up and the internet is working on this computer, but the laptop says something like the internet usage is limited or something, and its slow.

I did enter the username and password of my bell sympatico when i was setting up the router, but I still have to connect and disconnect using the bell icon or should I not be doing that, is the internet supose to be on all the time now?

You shouldn't be connecting or disconnecting anything on the computer (aside from if you want to turn Wifi on or of). You don't need and probably shouldn't have any software from an ISP on your system. Your router is logging in to the internet service, not your computer.

Well the router is connected, but it doesnt log into the internet i have to do that myself. I did set it up in a way to log into my ISP, i entered the name and password.

On the laptop, I successfully connected to the linksey router it says...but it says i have no internet, even though it connected to the router.

    LOCAL AREA CONNECTION STATUS

You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

    What does that mean???

It sounds like your router didn't assign an IP address to your computer.

This is on a laptop, connected wirelessly to a wireless router, right? You've got something configured wrong, or you've got software from your ISP that's messing things up. There's no reason you'd want any software from them on your computer, as your computer isn't logging in to your DSL connection.

So I must have missed a step during the set up of this router, and even though Im using the internet now, its not because of the router, the router i dont think is working.

Ok, so I reset the router, and went thru the process again.

I entered the username and password for ISP,
it asked to change the default password from admin, did that, then
it went into settings, SSID what channel to use, I chose 6, encryption was left blank before so I made it WPA personal, and I created a key.
after all of that it finally told me it was configured successfully, i checked the LAN and it says no problems.

I went up to my laptop and under "connect to internet", I chose connect to wireless, I entered my key like you told me, then it said it was connected to linkseys, when it check for internet it took forever and said it couldnt find internet connection.

If the router is connected to the internet and your able to surf the net on your desktop, but you just cannot connect on your laptop? This sounds like an issue related to your laptop.
there should be an option to "repair" your connection. this will force a release and renew of your ip# being assigned to you from your router. If your not getting a 192.168.x.x number then you have a setting wrong in your laptops networking.
I reccomend you google and read up on networking. Once you totally understand the aspect of networking and what you can do you will see how fun it is. GL

If you're still not so sure,
    1.Reset router
    2.Log into router interface/web page.
    3.User name and password.
    4.SSID & Channel
5.Enter encryption, now make sure you write this down or copy to a USB device.
6.Once you prepare to connect to the internet double click your wireless icon, your network name should come up.
    7.Highlight it and click connect.
8.It should bring you to the network key page, enter the key that you saved from the routers web page, hit enter and follow the steps if any. You should be able to connect to the internet now. This is basically the same steps you and Sykotic have dicuss just with one added step. Hope this helps you out.

Thank you to everyone who replied to me. I finally got it to work. I think my problem was I entered the wrong password for my ISP, because i thought it was something else, since it was always saved on the computer i never had to type it in and I forgot it was the original password.

After that, I hit the reset button on the router and went thru the process again, which I skipped to step 8 since all the cords were in. Then it asked for username and password for dsl, it check the settings, then asked for a change in default password, then it checked computer settings and internet, then i made sure my internet was off, I think that was the problem, then I looked and there was a internet connection on, even though i turned it off, so I went up to the laptop, and it said there was a connection AND INTERNET this time, and i was able to browse and its VERY FAST!!...I assume its because of the santa rosa? not the router.>>>

Santa Rosa wouldn't have anything to do with your network speed.
