My current wireless network status screen is displaying the number of packets sent and received, while my friend's laptop (on a different wireless network) is displaying the amount of data sent and received. How do I make my computer show the amount of data sent and received?

You don't mention where you're seeing this (it may be part of the Wifi card's drivers, which may be different), but one way to do it in Win2k/XP is Start/Run 'perfmon', click the '+', select 'network interface' as the object, then Bytes Sent and Bytes Recieved.

You can also see this info in Task Manager, on the Networking Tab (you may need to add the right columns from the 'View' menu).

I'm seeing this in the Wireless network connection status screen:
It is showing the number of packets sent and received instead of the number of bytes sent and received. Is there a way to make it show the number of bytes sent and received?

Hmm... I don't know about showing it there... My PC shows packets as well, and I don't see anywhere to change it. If your friend's PC shows kb, like I said, it could be something passed by the NIC driver, in which case it may not be changable?
