    What does the "L" stand for and what is the difference?

    The L stands for that router runs on Linux. Linux as opposed to VxWorks.

    Is the "L" version better or more capable than a regular "G" version? (I am talking about a removable antenna version)

    The L version is better then the no L version revision 4.0 and above. The L version can also be used to run alternative firmwares.
    The L version has a bigger flash.
    The best are still the WRT54G (without L) version 1-3.0. It tells the Version on the box.
