I'm tech support for my GF's friend on her Acer laptop that I recommended to her last year. I also got her a wireless B router and got it set up at her place so she can use her rig wirelessly in her home. This router is made by "network everywhere" and was some cheapo B router sold at a business supply place last year for like $10. It has worked flawlessly up until last night when I was over and did some updates.

Since I haven't gone over there in a while to keep her laptop updated I did all of those updates first. I could have been done and gone but thinking I was the major tech person that I was I checked to see if there was a firmware update for the router and indeed there was.

I d/l the update (wirelessly) and thought to myself that before I install it that maybe I should be wired into the router using an ethernet cable but figured nah I'll just try it wirelessly.

I went into the configuration page online for her router, and did the update. It said it was successful. I restarted the computer and for some reason I lost the signal from the router. The laptop could not find her network. I ended up going into the room where the modem (DSL) and router was and using the cable tried to get the router going but it would not configure itself to the modem. I could get internet using just the modem with the cable to the laptop but no matter what I did I just could not get the router going. I'm wondering if I messed up the router doing the firmware update wirelessly or not.

Here is the router that I got her.

I even tried to reset the router to factory specs and using the disc with the router to get it to accept the modem setting but no matter what I did it just wouldn't work. Since this router was so cheap I was thinking of chucking it, getting myself a better router for my network at home and giving her my current linksys wireless G router which I have done 2 firmware upgrades on and hasn't had any problems. I'm also much more familiar with my linksys router than this one.

Any ideas as to why this POS router doesn't work anymore?

With my router, after the upgrade firmware, it always resets itself, so you have to login to the router (using a cable) and change all of your security settings back to what they were. You also have to enable the wireless option, so you might check the settings and make sure it is all correct.

I can't do any of that since the router will not allow her DSL connection from the modem through so by hooking the laptop up to the router I can't get anything. Only connecting to the modem will she have internet, but not wirelessly of course.

Yeah I think the router is pooched.

No it's not but it's a learning experience so if I can get it going I will whether it takes me 5 mins or 5 hours.

If however it is pooched because I tried to update the firmware wirelessly and it messed up the router then I will give her my linksys one and I'll get myself a new router.

being able to connect to the internet while plugged into the router has nothing to do with being able to log into the router. you can log into a routers even if the router isn't connected to the modem.

Yes, just use the wire to reconfigure the router. Usually all you do is
    1) Plug it in
    2) Open your IE.
    3) type in the router address (Usually 192.168.0.1 *** may varie, check your mannual)

    ***
The router may ask for username and password. Most factory defult is
    username: admin
    password:

again, check you mannual for that.
    ***

    4) Reconfigure it to what it was.
    5) Cheers.

Never update firmware wirelessly. It's just like install a new window on a computer.
