Due to my location i can only get dial up internet, on my desktop i can get speeds around 46 kbps , but on my new sager 2090 i can only get around 26 kbps. My guess, it is the modem that is limiting my speed on my laptop since i can get a higher speed with my desktop. Is there any way i can speed up my dial up?

26 kbps on dial up? I'm assuming you're not talking about 56K modems or anything, but DSL or something like that?

I think he is talking about 56k modems...dsl is broadband and usually it would go higher than 46kbps.

You might want to call your dial-up provider and check their list of modem strings. Usually there is one you can add which connects you better. You can also search for that list yourself here :

    Dial-up --- I feel your pain. ;)

    M1I9K8E9 -
I can walk you through it, assuming you have XP as your OS. It's not hard to add the string to the "modem properties" section.

Hambone - Dial-up is usually at about 45000-52000 kbs - Phone lines transfer at 56k maximum, but you don't connect that high - Hence they call it a 56k modem.
    M1I9K8E9 - Print this out. ;)

Go to Control panel - open " Phone and Modem" option.
Click on "Modem", then "properties" at the lower right corner box.
Click on the "modem" option again and make sure your port speed is set at no higher than "57600". The "115200" will not make info transfer faster and may slow it down.
Then click on "advanced" when you will see a box for "Extra initialization command"
This is where you try different command "strings" to see what makes you connect at the best speed. Cut and paste the string that box.
Click "ok" and reconnect, see how it goes .. You may need to try different strings.

The other option is call your dial-up provider tech support and they will guide you along on the phone basically as I have written it down !
Good luck - You can do it! ~ R

eww, that's not a happy connection. OKay, I take it you have Vista on your new Sager? Next thing I would try is a re-install of your modem driver. Maybe something got corrupted.
Here you go, works for XP too. - http://www.motorola.com/softmodem/driver.htm - (Double check that this is the modem you have.- I just googled it quickly to find a link for you)
Same location in control panel, just chose the "driver" tab instead of "advanced". The motorola link has instructions for various windows OS driver updates, also.

If the driver update/re-install doesn't improve your connection, check the phone cord for any twists, knots or frays - If its the same line you are using on your desktop which connects at 46kbs, then it has something to do with the hardware. You'll have to call Sager to get it fixed. Be sure to do all those things before you call Sager, because they will most likely ask you to do the same.
Let me know how it goes

Older post but maybe it'll help someone. I could only connect at 24kb/s on my dial up so last week I said screw that and now use my cell phone as my modem and connect at 280kb/s! Must be a newer phone capable of getting EVDO/EV signal. My carrier is Alltel it cost's
$25/month unlimited. Verizon Wireless has the same thng but it was $60.
Check it out. Oh yeah it hooks throught the USB so it should probably the higher speed 2.0. Hope this helps someone.
