My wifes parents have minimal access to an internet connection. Where they reside they have DIAL UP, that is it.
I might realize this is a stupid question later, but do all laptops/notebooks have the ability to plug into a dial up connection?

Most laptops no longer have a RJ-11 jack. Buy a USB modem.

Yeah, I haven't seen a laptop with a built-in dial-up modem for years. Luckily, USB modems are pretty commonplace and cheap.

If you get an older used laptop, they might have the RJ-11. My Latitude has one built in... I never knew that, i just had to look for it.. :(

I still see an integrated modem option for some Toshiba Satellite laptops. Might be worth checking out.

I dunno guys...it depends on the buyer. I just bought a dv7t quad from HP and included a build in modem, just in case.

They are starting to become options rather than standard items or completely excluded from certain models. I know that on the new Dell Latitude E6400, the modem is optional but on the smaller E4300, there is no internal modem option.

Are they so far out that DSL is not an option? Is ISDN an option -- might sound outdated but ISDN can reach further distances and can use repeaters like POTS, but unlike DSL.

Up until about 2 years ago, they were pretty much standard on all laptops. Mobile broadband has only become recently affordable.
