(Insert reason why you can't have cable/dsl here)

I just recently got a HP HDX16t which had no modem port on it so i bought the HP usb external modem. At first it seemed fine with the internet, but then I get constant disconnects that I never got with dial up on my older pc. If anyone has any suggestions I would really be appreciated. I have tried switching phone cords and that wasn't it, so it leads me to believe it's either the modem or windows vista.

Its a good laptop is all i can say, and about the disconnect errors. If i were you I would get wireless wifi connection, you can get faster speeds and there should be no problems at all when connecting with that laptop. Just guessing but if at first it worked, and then stopped it can't be windows vista but settings maybe which have changed over time? If you think its in the modem then the only thing is some malfunction which i highly doubt. Plz try giving us more information about your problem?

Well at first the disconnects were in away that would make it just seem normal with dial-up but at times now I can only get on for like 2 mins, 3 mins, 10 mins, then it stops working and i have to reconnect.

I can't get broadband where I live, because it's not here. Go figure it's right down the street and they don't offer it on mine. The settings never changed as far as I know.

You tried a new phone cord, what about the jack?

Phone line conditions do change, especially as the weather changes. could be just noise that might clear up if it's been particularly wet aside

Also, try deleing the network connection and removing all drivers for the modenm, then reinstalling.

LOL yes there is aways that, forgot about that. Any way if it still doesn't work, the worst thing that must happen if you want internet connection through a dial up. Is going to the manufacturer or your wholesaler and ask them to take a look at it. But the symptoms you have, relate to what most people have with dial up's i've seen lots of forums on this subject and one forum member said that disconnecting after about 15-20 minutes was routen for him. Then again i've had experience with dial up 56k modems and the speed i got through that was sad,so it might not be your PC or Modem just the connection between your dial up provider and your line...so good luck hope it starts working!

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. Last night it worked better after I downloaded a new driver, but it still disconnects frequently. I did, however manage to last 2 hours at one point. I don't really use the net for anything important, just e-mail and such. Thanks for all the replies though.

Did you try creating a new connection? I don;t know why that sometimes works, but it does.

You can try adjusting the modem properties port speed for something that is more in line with your dial up speeds.

    Did you try another jack?

If you want to use a dial up just for e-mail check up and some chat sites and don't spend more then about 2 hours on it, then dial up isn't a bad idea, any way thanks for the rep same back to you!

I did try making a new connection and that didn't help. I am going to play with the modem speeds soon and see if that does anything. A different jack seems to have nothing to do with it as of now. Thanks for all the ideas though!
