    Desktop is turned off then ihave no internet on my laptop?

    Hi,
    I got a new laptop the other day, my friend set my wireless up for me and got it working with my desktop but when I turn my desktop off I cant get the internet on my laptop!?
    My laptop is connected to my wireless, its just the internet i cant get when the comps off. Please help, its driving me mad.

    P.s, I went to my boyfriends house and I connected to his wireless with no trouble! What could it be? (im not a computer person)

    Your friend set up your computer with Internet connection sharing

    I can only surmise that your desktop has two network cards? and he connected a wireless access point to the second network port. Why he did that, I don't know...

    Perhaps he had a wireless access point, rather than a router, and no other way to do it?

    You need to describe exactly what hardware you have (device model numbers, a physical description of how everything is connected, internet service).

    Without that , we cannot walk you through a better setup.

    ...or get a new friend who doesn't like torturing you
