Desktop Faster Than Laptop, Both on Same Router

I have a desktop and laptop that are both directly connected to the same router and the desktop (ancient) is getting about 11.5mbps while the laptop gets 7.5mbps, according to SpeakEasy Test. I have ran the test several times and the results are consistent. Any ideas of what's causing this? I feel like I'm missing some huge obvious thing that I'm going to be embarrassed that I didn't think of lol.

 

You don't mention any hardware so your asking us the equivalent of "I have a yellow car and a blue car--why is my blue car faster?"

Quality of the network controller chip? Most network controllers are the equivalent of old software modems--the chipset handles the the incoming and outgoing traffic but the heavy lifting is done by the CPU

Your ancient desktop may very well be using a very good nic that handles packet processing leaving the CPU to handle other things.

Could also be the cable (assuming you have not swapped them)--different cables can make a big difference. Network cables all suffer from interference and signal attenuation depending on shielding and how well twisted the communication pairs are. Quality control on cables is not high, though, so two cables made by the same company on different days may be very different.

But again, this is all speculation....I say its faster because it is the blue one....
