I have trouble connecting my Belkin Pre N router to work.

When i plug my lan cable into the Pre N router, it shows that it is always "acquiring an IP address" after 1 minute later, the yellow sign beside the lan notification appears, saying thre is limited or no connectivity.

SO i thought there must be something wrong with my Broadcom LAN adaptor (built in by dell), and i plugged it into my WEB EXCEL router..... it worked fine.

I have read some of the other posts such as going to TCP/IP and turning DHCP assigninng on etc etc.... but no use.

all your help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Is the firmware updated on the router and drivers updated on the wireless internal card. Also, try disabling all Firewalls. Good Luck!

1- Check to see if any firewalls/antivirus SW is enabled, this includes the XP firewall.
2 - power cycle the router, by unplugging for a few secounds.
3 - Check your IP address, go to run -> cmd -> type ipconfig @ command prompt
(a 169.254 address is an internal address from your NIC, a 192.168 address is a given address from the router)
4 - if all else fails, try resetting the stack in a command prompt, start - run - cmd - then
type-> netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    (this resets everything)
5 - updating the firmware is a good idea, but may not be an option @ work. I doubt this is a firmwear issue, but u never know... Check your windows updates under hardware, and see if there are any updates for your NIC.

HI, thanks for all the advice. I have tried all of them but it still doesnt work.

From CMD, i can see that the router has assigned me an address it is like 192.168.x.x

But i see a Blank next to gateway.
I cannot update router firmware as i cannot even access to it.
Router powers up allrite and detects when i plug it into my adsl modem and my laptop.

    Any further suggestions?

Does your computer see the wireless network? Also, try hard wired to the router through an Ethernet cable. Also, what you could do is just get Belkin wireless adapter. :)

What do you mean you can't access the router? It has an IP address that if you type it into a browser should get you to its admin. Also, did you buy it recently? I'd take it back since pre-n offers little to no value anyway.

Brian : my belkin pre n router uses 192.168.2.1 to access admin previllges. I cannot access it. It wont even let me get into the address above. ( its the one with Airgo, true mimo technology)

greebler: thanks for your help but i cant seem to get it goin.
(looks like its a NIC internal address, router not giving me one

Do u think it might be a clash between DHCPs? Ie do i have to disable DHCP on my DSL modem?

Below is a screenshot of my CMD. I tried using wireless, i get the same problem too... the yellow sign at the bottom. (but wireless detects it allright i just cant connect!)

I have tried the reset button on the router many times too

I removed your image, it was breaking our design. Please make it smaller or load through our interface.

Have you tried belkin support yet? The other thing, is that IP might be conflicting with your cable modem. If you plug the router directly into your machine, with no other layers, you still can't get to the admin console?

if you plug your laptop directly into your router via an rj45/ethernet cable, you're saying you can't access the administrative functions? you should be able to do that regardless of whether the router is attached to the modem or not.

if you can't even do that then something is seriously wrong with your hardware. exchange or return it for new hardware.

No, he means connect the computer wired to the router with the modem still in the internet port on the back of the router. Plug your laptop into one of the other ports. Then, if it doesnt work, call tech support.

that sounds like an IP addy conflict; the inside of the modem and the outside of the router have the same default IP. disconnect router from modem. plug laptop into router. access admin functions. change IP addy of router. reconnect all.

Wow, thats strange, did you call tech support. What i would do, return the router and get a new one. There must be a problem with the router.

are you sure you're trying to hit the correct IP on the router? i backread and you mentioned an addy of .2.1 which doesn't sound like a default addy; usually they are .0.1 or .1.1.

where did you find the .2.1 addy?

Yeah, should be like 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101, etc. I dont think 192.168.2.100. Did you check to see in the install did you match everything.

another thing, do you have your wifi card properties set to obtain the IP addressing info from the router or do you have a static address entered?

I think you really need to try to reinstall it again. Make sure everything is exactly how it should be. To get all the information, double click on the little computer on the bottom right corner. Hit support up top. Try the repair button, and then hit details and there is all the information for the correct stuff. :) Good Luck! :)

Did you try powercycling the modem with it connected to the router. Also, try repairing the connection. Good Luck! :)

    Yup.
Theres nothing wrong with the connection. I just cant get internet from my DSL modem to work with my wireless router.

Internet is fine and all, when i hardwire it directly to my DSL modem

I ment repair it on the computer, try that to, try doing the setup over to. Good luck!
I had the same problem with my linksys and just messed with things and it worked. I actually exited the middle of the setup and it worked after.

are you sure your modem's internal IP is 10.0.0.2? that just sounds completely wrong. where are you getting that info from?

if that is true, then the problem is that your router and modem are on different subnets; hence they can't see each other.

can you now access the config page on your router?

    hey drumfu.
it is on 10.0.0.2 because tht is where i change my settings and how i get onto the net now.

I beleive thats why the router and the modem cant see each other.

Yes i can get onto the router now using wireless.
    whats next???

ok, i actually have to head out the door in about 5 mins so lemme try pointing you in the right direction....

    1. access your router. tell it to receive it's IP addressing scheme from the modem

    2. tell the router to dish out an IP addressing scheme to whatever is connected to it (wired or wifi); i.e., DHCP = on

    3. make sure your notebooks' cards (NIC and wifi card) are set up to receive IP addressing info from the router ("obtain an IP address... blah blah blah" under TCP/IP properties)

most of this stuff should be set by default to just 'plug and play' so i'm not sure why you're having such difficulty.

i'm still a little lost on the 10.0.0.2 address for the modem, but regardless, if the router is set to grab IP addressing info from the modem, it should get an addy on the same subnet so that shouldn't be a problem.

A crossover cable is for uses like connecting two machiens directly together. A LAN cable or patch cable is more basic and used for networking. They look identical though.
