I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 and kept getting the 'Dell WLAN card controller has stopped working' message. A friend of mine also had the same issue, but everything we heard to do was not working. Finally I decided to purchase a USB wireless adapter. I uninstalled the Dell WLAN and installed the USB wireless - but keep getting the message that there is another service that manages the wireless connection. I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Probably Dell card came with its own service line Intel PRO-set or whatever this Broadcom service is called- you need to uninstall everything that came with Dell card- not only the drivers but also the connection manager.

What card is it exactly and what have you done so far- removed the card and uninstalled the driver via control panel?

I uninstalled the driver via the control panel. I have not removed anything.

It's either a reminder of your Dell connection manager or new connection manager from the software that came with the USB Wi-Fi device refusing to work with Windows own wireless service.

I had a similar problem with a wireless modem instillation on my laptop. I had to remove software from C programs and the registry before the problem was solved.
