Ok, here's the story, I have a pretty old Dell TrueMobile Wireless-G 1450 USB Adapter that came with a PC a few years ago. The latest drivers from Dell.com installed with Windows XP but it required some manual tweaking to install with Windows Vista (install on XP and then copy the installed driver files to Vista and manually install the driver). However, now on Windows 7, even with the manual installation, the drivers refuse to be installed.

Is there any way around this, or do I have to buy a new wireless adapter (name one, please)?

In windows go to device properties, in network devices click on the Dell WLAN card.
Now search for drivers automatically (online) it may find a driver this way.
