First off I'd like to say that I am the proud owner of the dell 700m laptop. After reading reviews here and everyones opinion, I decided to get it and have had no regrets. :dell:
    (1.6 ghz, 512mb ram, 60gb hardrive)

Right now I'm having a problem with my local area connection. I'll plug in my ethernet cable into my computers port, and it says "connected 100mbps" so it recognizes that its plugged in BUT I cant get the internet to work at all. Norton is disbaled and so is the firewall. M wireless works fine.

(Also, i dont know if this is an upcoming problem but my screen avery once in a while will like flash, blank, but very vey short almost like it blinks. Only like once or twice a day, very rare but i;m wondering if this is forewarning of a bigger problem to come)

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Alexander

by the way, this website and forums are great. I love the reviews on the laptops. Very Sufficient

Congratulations on your brand new notebook!

Regarding your LAN, there could be some things that could cause it not to work, but there's some additional info needed. A couple things like, are you connecting to your network at home or at the office? Are you getting an IP address?

    1. If it's to your home network, make sure you have MAC filtering disabled on your router

    2. Check to see if you're actually getting an IP address (Start -> Run -> CMD -> OK -> IPCONFIG /ALL) Does it list a 192.x.x.x type address for IP or is it 169.x.x.x? If it's 169.x.x.x, that means you're note getting an IP from your router. Check to make sure your router has DHCP enabled, if not, make sure you either turn it on or manually set a static IP address for your LAN (Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click your LAN card -> Properties -> Double click TCP/IP Protocol and manually enter a compatible IP address (192.168.x.x), subnet mask (255.255.255.0), Gateway (192.168.x.x, this is your routers IP address) & DNS (same as the routers address).

    3. Try renewing the IP address (Start -> Run -> CMD -> IPCONFIG /RENEW), this will renew the address for your card (in case it doesn't automatically renew).

If this is an office network, there could be a some other things limiting you from surfing the web. To name a couple, your computer is not authorized to get IP (not on domain) & proxy settings you don't have setup. Others include user restrictions and other stuff based on user access levels.

In any case, try the above items and see if it helps.

The issue with your LCD is a bit weird. I have seen my LCD do the exact same thing, but that only happens during bootup when the display drivers initialize. This could be a future problem, so I'd keep a close eye on it to see if it gets worse. If you're concerned, I'd get it swapped out before the warranty is up.

Its definitly something withtthe computer. I command promted it and it cam back as a 192 address, the one I know my router to be. The symbol in the right corner of the screen says I'm connected, so it is defintly reading that I am connected.

This is a home network, and I have connected various laptops to it with no problem using the ethernet cable.

I am almost certain there is maybe a setting that must be changed on the computer because it wont work on my frends router or my brothers college network when we dropped him off.

So..... the cable is connected, the router recognizes I'm connected, the computer recognizes i'm connected (100 mbps)..... but no internet or email.

Try Repairing the connection. Double click on the little computer icon at the right bottom of the screen where the little connected message shows. Then click on support. Good Luck!

    Actually, I see the problem:

    1. You don't have DHCP enabled as Drumfu indicated
    2. You have entered the static address of your router into your notebooks TCP/IP settings
    3. It's possible you have Internet Connection Sharing enabled (IP Routing = Yes, should say No)

The router normally uses the address of 192.168.0.1 (depending on your router). This is the address that is used to access the routers internal configuration menu. If you enter this into your TCP/IP settings, you'll never be able to get to your router, or at least you shouldn't be able to. Most routers require you to select an IP range (DHCP) that is above 10 (eg. 192.168.0.11 or above) as the 1st 10 is reserved.

You also have a static address, so you won't get any IP addresses from your router if DHCP is already enabled.

You also look like you have Internet connection Sharing enabled. This feature generally makes the computer connected to the modem (DSL/cable) act like router. It will give IP's to the other computers connected to it so they can share the access to the web.

Here is what you need to do:

    1. http://www.umn.edu/adcs/network/ics-disable.html (just use 1st 3 steps for XP) or http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=230112

    2. Now you need to change the TCP/IP information for your LAN card. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Double Click Network Connections -> Right Click your Local Area Connection -> Properties.

On the General tab, double click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Change settings to Obtain An IP Address Automatically & the same for DNS below. Click OK and close off Control Panel.

Now goto the Command Prompt. Start -> Run -> CMD -> CLick OK -> type IPCONFIG /RENEW and hit enter). You should now obtain a new IP address from your router (since you said other computers worked fine, the router should be configured correctly). All you need to do now is surf.
