I run PC Pitstop Optimzer and have been able to get a log of my download speeds. During August and most of September using Bellsouth DSL Ultra (1.5 Mbps) it held fairly steady at 1250 Kbits, but during the month of October it seemed to drop under 1000 Kbits and as low as 750 Kbits. My configuration was a Westel modem with a Linksys router. The entire time my laptop was hard wired.

I've recently moved to where my sister has Bellsouth DSL Lite (258 Kbps) again with a Westel modem and my Linksys router and it's been averaging about 165 Kbits. I got the same results earlier today but oddly enough, I just ran a test with Speakeasy and the results were 249 kbps. At this time my laptop is wireless.

    1) Is my system download ability degrading?

    2) Is it Bellsouth? I upgraded to DSL Ultra today and the order satus says completed but I haven't noticed any difference.

    3) Could it possibly the router even though the "signal quality is excellent" and the "speed 54 Mbps"?

    4) Why the difference is speeds between Speakeasy and Pitstop?

    5) Any other ideas?

    I wonder why that is?

As far as I know DSL is not like cable, where when more people are online your connection slows down, but a dedicated wire with the only difference being the distance from the CO.

Well, for now I'd be happy getting 500 kbps. At least then I could watch this years episodes of LOST online. I just finished catching up on the entire series on DVD via Blockbuster! Hopefully the higher speeds will kck in tomorrow.

Still, if anyone can help answer some of my concerns I'd appreciate it.

not every server you test to is going to return the same speed amount. This is dependant on that servers latency. This varies from minute to minute depending on server load.
Your wireless connection has nothing to do with your modems connection to the internet.
