Hello I am moving to a college that does not have internet accesses other than dial up if you pay for it. I’m trying to get the fastest internet connection that I will probably play some online games with. (WoW, everquest 2)

(~$30) I was looking at DSL, but im not sure if I can do that threw the college. Has anyone done this?

(~$20 MEdia Net Unlimited) Also looking at Cingulars Edge network. I can connect my phone to my laptop and get on the edge network. I’ve heard that this can be as slow as dial up or faster.

(~$15) And I’ve been looking at NetZeros G3 connection. Its cheep “fast” dialup.

Anyone have any suggestions on this? Thanks!

a college without internet access? Well I hope that on campus they have internet access and you do mean just the dorms and off campus are not serviced, or my first suggestion would be to go elsewhere!

Unless you're out in the boonies, there's going to have to be some sort of DSL or cable offered and you should go with that instead of any type of dial-up. Whatever internet solution you go with is going to be independent of the college obviously, so I don't understand what you mean by "do that through the college".

Ok, thank you. I don't know much about DSL other than it goes threw the phone lines and is pritty fast.

Will the college know that Im setting this up in my dorm?

Also if I set up the DSL modem and what not in New York, can I take it to say Texas and still use it? As long as the DSL is covered in by the same provider?

well if the DSL is to be setup in a dorm room they would certainly know because whoever sets it up would have to certain things to make your phone lines support DSL, and it depends on the building as to whether this is even possible. This is really a question to be asking the college or students there. With DSL you lease the modem from the company, they certainly would not take kindly to you moving it to another location and if you got DSL in NY and TX you'd need to subscriber lines and they'd give you two modems anyway.

Currently I get to websites about 115kbs with EDGE. On downloads of files I get about 3.5-7 KBs. = 7MB file takes about 30 min to download.

Looks like DSL is out of the picture so its ether EDGE or Dial up. Im really looking for speed. About what speeds do 56k modems run at these days? LOL I havent had one in years.

They do have some computers in school that have high speed access. But not in the dorms.

Ok I compared my phone Nokia 6820 (EDGE class 6) and the nokia 6230 (EDGE class 10) This was done at a Cingular store so I could not hook my pda or laptop up to the phone to see how fast the speeds were on my laptop.

There was a diffrence in speed while serfing on MEdia Net. The class 10 phone was about 3-7 seconds faster than the class 6. Now what does that mean for me? If it runs that much faster on a little phone how much faster will it make my PDA or Laptop connect to the internet?
