so according to at&t I should get 3.0Mbits but right now I get around 2.2Mbits. They tell me its cause of the bad wiring in my house. But when my max was 1.5Mbits I could hit that easily. With the 3.0Mbits I can get it to 2.2Mbits but then it'll cap off and increase a bit then decrease. My connection is pretty stable there'll be a disconnect once every few weeks.

Is this really a wiring problem or something wrong with my modem and router? My modem and router are both 3-4 years old? Maybe they've slowed down? Does this happen to modems and routers? they get old and die?

    Trial and Error bud!

    Try replacing Modem
    Try replace router

    See a difference?
If not, then its the wiring. And you have new equipment where your all set for the next 5 years.

woah.......DSL (digital subscriber line) well if that really is what you are on then i would expect to NEVER hit 3mbps. What package have you signed up for and how far from the exchange are you?

Try running a cablenut and optimize your connection.

The first thing I would do is to make sure all of the wall jacks are wired correctly. You can get phone line tester at Radio Shack and most electronic super stores like Fry's. Particularly the ones that have something plugged into them. If one is reversed it possiable for it to put noise on the phone line. Now if your house is relative new your wiring may but good. But what happens on older houses, is they cut and splice in the attic or where ever they can find a line. This is where most of the bad connection will be found. You can remove all of the jacks and clean up the connections. Most phone lines are a continous jump from one jack to the next, which increase the likely hood of a bad connection. If you have any cordless phone unplug them and see if you see an increase. The transformers can induce noise on the phone line if bad. Have fun hunting. I have corrected many in older houses.

Another think that can happen is the dsl line is weak. It takes special equipment to check that. And distance you are from there switch gear. The longer the distance the likely hood of a weak signal.
