Ok, so ive set up my router, and everything is working fine when my laptop is in the same room (150 mbps, max download speed etc.), but when i go upstairs to my room my signal drops to one bar and my downloads are so incredibly slow. What i dont understand is that when i go to speedtest.com, my internet speed is the the same for both rooms. I' ve updated to the latest firmware and drivers for the router and my wifi link 5100 agn card. Please help this is driving me crazy.
BTW, i previously was using a belkin wireless g+ router that i bought two years ago and i got 4 bars on my laptop in my room from the same spot where the dlink router is. How can my belkin g+ router have more range that my new dlink n 150 router? There has to be something wrong. Please help. Thanks

Anyway- since the old router managed fine in the upstairs room, the new one should too. You need to check the variables- maybe there's some interference from neighboring networks (use inSSIDer to check). Try different wireless channels as it can also be sth else like Bluetooth devices or cordless phones.
How are your pings upstairs? High pings may have big impact on browsing experience (but not on downloads). -
download's advice is pretty much spot on.
only other thing that comes to my mind is that the antennas on your new router could be quite a bit different from the ones on your old belkin. spatial orientation of the router (and/or the wireless client) can sometimes affect signal strength. try adjusting the antennas? (however, note that this need not be the issue. First check the variables that have been mentioned such as wireless channel.) -

Like downloads said the 11n/g use the same freq. As far as distance, if the routers are using the same MIMO technology and freq the distance should be the same too. 11n has a history of dropping speed a lot quicker than 11g but that could be that it's got more to loose. Are you running in Mixed mode? And do you have other pc that will connect wirelessly? You also need to know that 11n is required to play nice with all other networks in the area. So do the scan as downloads suggested, then pick a channel that will give the least conflict. I do not know if Dlink gives you control over the power, like some do, but it could be something else to check... You may need to switch back to 11g, some have found that 11g gives them better speed once you get to the further distances. 2.4ghz penetrates walls better than 5ghz.
