    Hi there,

I have been using the N mode on my DLink 655 router for the last 2 months and recently it's been working well and getting speeds up to 130mbps which is fine for me. My girlfriend uses G and she's been getting 56mbps no problem.

Over the last few days my speed has dropped through the floor. Here is a snapshot from the router:-

I'm getting 6mbps at the moment and it's on N!!!!

I have the latest firmware installed (1.11) it's broadcasting on channel 5 and there are no other networks broadcasting on this channel.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks!!!!

On some other threads on here I posted my experience with the Dlink 655. the first one I bought the wifi chip/circuitry burned out in about 10 minutes. The second one had errors during config. I gave up on dlink. I don't really understand the great ratings they have gotten with the crap they are putting out. I have a WRT600N from Linksys and the intel 4965AGN card and got 270 out of the box with the router over my head in a closet on the second floor of my house.

Wow, 100% signal. My notebook doesn't even pick that up.

Try and reset the router to the factor settings. Then make sure you are using WPA2 encryption.

Also, try to enable 'Auto Channel Scan'. Or use channels 1,6,11.

Wait.. their software sucks? What software?

If you are installing the stuff that was 'optional' when you upgraded your firmware, then that's what probably screwing you over. The third-party security crap.. is just crap. Glad I didn't think twice about installing that on my router. ;)

Thanks for the advice. I have it set to WPA2 (otherwise the high N speeds don't work). I have Auto Channel set too!!!

It's such a pain in the ass to set up, I think I'd reset the damned things as a last resort.....

Nah I didn't install any optional stuff. When I say software I mean the setup software on the router..... Unbelieveably user unfriendly.....

Thing is it was working fine until last week!! I was getting 130mbps all the time!!

Here is what I'm getting now:-

Well.. it looks like you're using an old (I mean old) wireless driver.

    The latest is 11.5.1.15 Link

A fact I know from when Draft N came out, dunno if this is your problem but to use "N" speed the router must detect and be connected to ONLY N sources. If you had 3 "N" connections going and then just one "G" connects it will then only transmit in G mode.

Some routers have since then become able to run in dual mode and do both but its been sketchy, I was looking into this months ago and have no idea if the problem has gotten better.

My router was definitely running in Dual Mode. My girlfriends laptop was up at 54mbps and mine at 130mbps. Really really strange!!!! We only have 2 connections to the router, my laptop and hers.

To cap it all 2 mins ago it was at 112mbps, I just checked it a second ago and it's at 26mbps........ WTF?!!!

    :D

Seriously try to disconnect her connection and see if it fixes it, like I said dual mode has been sketchy on some routers after all N is still in draft.

Also probably a good idea to do a hard reboot on the router.

Also you can try to force G mode only and just use G and see if you have issues. I have fiber optic internet at home and thats the fastest you can get except major universities and stuff and I wont ever get near 40mb/s or so that G will handle so you probably dont have a need to use N over G except just to sleep better at night.

I've shut down her laptop and it doesn't seem to change anything. I'll reset the router and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't work I'll flick it onto G. So infuriating though as it was working fine!!! I've just updated the Wireless Card software so I'll see if that helps too. Thanks for the help :D

No problem, if all else fails after you tried everything dont eliminate the fact you may have just got a bad router. Dlink has a rep for craping out all the time, I infact have a dead Dlink in the next room acting as a coaster for my Buffalo router.

Switched it onto G and all is good. I only have a 3mbps line anyway so most I can get is the speed below (which was the highest I got also whilst using N):-

Thanks again for the help everyone, much appreciated :D

Well add +1 to why I do not recomend N routers/cards right now :p

Here is what I get on my wireless G with my internet at home.

Yeah its awesome, I can bittorrent and play games at the same time with no issues, and sad thing is I think somebody is downloading in the next room right now too (and thats why the ping is kinda high) also I have PPPoE since I got it when it first came out, all the new installs are DHCP so its even nicer.

Its 40$ a month for this service, and they have one 2x as fast but it cost 200$ a month, a huge jump in price.

However New York I think it is, or somewhere near there gets the 2x faster service for the same price as the one I have, I dunno why they only give it to them up there.

In Japan they have 100mb/s residential services in some areas but I dont know the cost.

The highest I can get in West Hollywood is 6mbps with AT&T... $35 a month for that privilege too (I was in error earlier, we pay $30 a month for 3mbps) I just found out it's $5 to upgrade to 6mbps so I think we might as well do it! It'll be great for watching films on Netflix :D

100mb/s, unreal...... My first dial up at home I was lucky to get 10kb/sec!!

I think the one i got is just not powerful enough. im getting 56mbps right now & im only one level up & one room over from the stupid thing. grrrrrrrrrr

How strange, I turned N on again earlier today and have an 130mbps uninteruppted connection to the router. The only thing that has changed is the channel, it has changed to channel 7 rather than 5 which was giving me the problems.....

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

did you change the channel, or did you have it set to auto-select?

also, the dir-655 is a very reliable router, contrary to what a few uninformed users may have posted.

Also,we run g/n mixed mode and using dlink adapters we hit 300mbps, even in our computer shop out back. Lots of factors come into play.........
