    Hi there,

I have the above Router and Wireless card in my T61P.

Over the last few weeks I have noticed a constant decrease in my net speed. When I ran a Speedtest at speedtest.net in November I was getting speeds of 2600 kbps. Not rocket speed but fine for general web browsing. Recently it's gone down to 600 kbps and under which makes watching videos on Youtube / Liveleak / Netflix a nightmare.

I went into the settings of my Dlink and noticed it was set to a/b/g. My wireless card can support G and N but my girlfriends only supports G so I set it to G only and rebooted the router. Hey presto I now can't access it at all!! I have changed the settings on the Wireless Card on my laptop to G only, that didn't help so I've left the settings on a/b/g.

Any idea why the damn thing won't connect? The Wireless is on, I can see the network, the Wireless Key is set but it just won't associate.

Thankfully I have Sprint Wireless Card so I can access the net without it!! I need to get the damned thing going though.

    Thanks!

Make sure you have the latest firmware. Also, set it to accept wireless G and N since both your card and your gf's card will be able to connect.

Sometimes I just unplug the power cord from the back of the router and modem and wait a few minutes and plug them back in. Kind of 'refreshes' the connection.

Thanks for the advice! The friggin thing still won't connect though. The settings on the router are:-

    WPA - Personal (PSK)
    802.11 G
and it has a network key

    The 4965AGN's settings are:-

Wireless mode 802.11a/g (I switched it back after changing it to G only)
    802.11N mode is enabled.

For some reason it just won't associate with the router :(

DLink's software really sucks too. I updated the Thinkadvantage software during the week and it's brutally slow to use.... UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had the same problem with this router when I tried to make any configuration changes to the D-link while on WIFI. Solution for me was to connect via lan to make changes.

11n prefers WPA2 Personal AES. Min 20 random generated chr.

Delete your location and then reboot your nb. Then add the connection back in. Use copy paste to enter the string, eliminate the typing errors. Do the setup on routers with a wired connection.

Also check to see what services are being loaded for your wireless. You should only need TCP/Ip and MS Client.

    FW can block connections too.

Thanks very much for the advice. I finally got it going again this afternoon with my laptop running N and my girlfriends running G. The net speed is brutally slow though, my connection is 130kbps and hers is 54kbps. I'm lucky to get more than 20kb / sec downloading from the Internet. This is really strange as up until recently I've had 200kb/sec - 300kb/sec running G. Hers is just as slow. I've deleted all cookies/temporary files / browser cache and rebooted the router and DSL modem to no avail

I just ran another test on Speedtest.net, this was slightly faster but not much:-

Is this down to my ISP (the wonderfully **** AT&T!!)?

    Thanks!

Even on wireless the speed test normally show your actual connection speed. It sounds like you may be having a dsl connection issue. Contact your ISP provider and let them run a line test. You may also need to do a direct connect to the modem and see if the speeds are good or bad. If bad, clone your mac address of the pc used to setup the account into the router. And try the speed test again with wired then wireless.

Try switching it over to the 40mhz band if in the 5 ghz freq. Other wise if in 2.4 it may be see another AP and playing nice as their suppose to.

You may also need to optimize your connection. I have found cablenut to be the best. Make sure you get the aux pack, for more settings. Then pick the seting that best matches your isp.

I also have a d-link 655. I had speed issues with this router for a bit. Had one laptop on 11n and another on 11g, but the channel width on the router was only set to 20Mhz. Switched it to 40Mhz width, instant result. You can also change the width to Auto(20/40Mhz). But the 655 is only on the 2.4Ghz freq. Also try what blue said. Run a direct connection to the modem and check the speeds.

Here's a link to the thread about my issues. Hope it helps you a bit.

    got same config here:
both N of the 4965AGN (max 130Mbit) and G on the other laptop (54Mbit)

You need put the the router on:
    N & G band
    WPA2 AES Cypher
    and not hide your Ssid.

Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it.

I spent an hour on the phone with AT&T last night, the problem with the speed is down to a fault on the line, they're sending someone out to look at it.

At least it's prompted me to get my laptop working on N!! I can't wait to see what the speed is when the line is sorted (fingers crossed).

    Thanks again.

If you want 300mbps, then you'll need a compatible chipset. Either buy all D-Link Xtreme equipment, or replace the internal laptop wifi card with an Atheros 5418 based chipset.

Well it's maxing out on N at 130mps, for my net usage that's fine. Strangely my internet connection has finally speeded up. Just in time for AT&T to come tomorrow!!!

    The speed isn't rocket speed:-

But it's a hell of a lot faster than it was. I suppose whether I'm running N or G on this line doesn't really matter as the connections quite slow to begin with. AT&T said they were sending a 3mps signal to us so it looks like I'm getting 90% of it.

It's fast enough to watch Netflix / Youtube online, it'll do for the time being :D

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated!!

At&T may have found the problem if your speed came back up. And yes the speeds are fast enough to stream video.
