As the title says.. I have a Intel WiFi link 5100 card and a DIR-655 router. I've updated drivers/firmware and combed through the settings.

    I'm set to N only.. WPA2(AES) only.. Auto20/40Mhz.

This is the speed as reported through task manager. Not sure if I should be using a different program to monitor performance or if there is something better.

The rest of the network is wired. One computer running at 1Gbps and another at 100Mbps (this computer is going bye-bye very soon). And that is pretty much it.

Any insight into the problem would be greatly appreciated. I've also posted on the DLink forums so hopefully I get something I can work with.

Really considering returning this and going with a dualband WRT610 from LinkSys.

Don't set your wireless adapter to N only, try to multimode and tell us what happens.

I set the router to N only not the adapter. I hadn't played with any adapter settings. Only place I had found to do so is in the advanced tab of the driver properties and I'm playing with that now with no changes.

I tried the router in N only and N and G mixed mode both with the same results.

Keep the router with N+G mixed. Now, what windows do you have?

Windows Vista 64bit. Brand new Gateway P-7811FX Laptop. All I've done is remove bloatware and install some software and update drivers basically.

Same results in mixed g/n mode. Bounces between 58 and 65 Mbps mostly.

Now, go to your wireless adapter settings window; right click on the network icon at the bottom of the screen, select the network option, select status, select properties, then make sure that you have set the appropriate wireless mode, including maximum transmit power.

Maybe 20 feet through a floor, but it doesn't matter if I go downstairs and sit on the router. It just stays the same.

Under wireless mode for my adapter I can't select N. It has another section where I can enable/disable N and select the Mhz for the N (Auto or 20Mhz, I have auto selected).

Under the actual wireless mode setting all I have are a/b/g and mixes of those options. I just selected a/g as nothing else really seemed to fit and I don't want to enable b at all.

WPA2 with AES selected on the router.

I'm trying to find a new driver.. mine is dated 4/27/08. I updated it once not sure if that's the problem.

I have to go now, I'll think a little bit harder.

It is certainly not normal 65Mbps, is very low for N. Sometimes you may have some incompatibilities between the wireless card and the router in the event they are using different communication chipset brand, which is the case, but not such big gap.

I thought about that.. but with the widespread use of Centrino and Centrino 2 and the fact that there are only 3 WiFi cards (4965/5100/5300) authorized for use to qualify for the brand I would assume that would be some of the most compatible.

Obviously right behind the N cards made by the routers manufacturer themselves. This is why I'm sitting here fairly confused for the most part.

Really leaning towards going to a dual band Linksys like the WRT610N atm. Only had the router a few days so that shouldn't be a big deal, but I also hate giving up on a problem. So it'll bother the hell outta me for days.

It's now bouncing between 108Mbps and 120Mbps while I'm upstairs with a floor between me and the router. I guess that isn't terrible. Not sure if the combo of a 5100 and the Dlink is capable of anything more.

I heard that the 5100 doesn't perform well, actually worst than the previous 4965AGN. Perhaps you should exchange it for the 5300 one, that's a gem.

the intel cards only have the 20 Mhz band at 2.4Ghz, so they are limited at 130Mbps.
it was like this with 4965 - have a dir 655 and can only get 130. i think this hasn't change in 5100

I have my router and card set to auto and my router is reporting its running at 40Mhz so I don't think that's correct.

And now I'm back down stuck at 65Mbps again and I just don't know why.

I'm wondering if it's just some kinda interference. I thought ahead and tried to keep the 2.4ghz band clear in my house. Bought DECT 6.0 cordless phones and so forth.

But we live in a townhouse and there are about 15 different 802.11g networks that I can see running when I go to connect. (If I don't auto-connect)

Maybe it's just a straight up interference problem and I would just do better with a dual band router and running in the 5Ghz range.

    Thoughts?

My 2 cents is that the 2.4GHz will not give you the 40MHz you need anyway. With regards the 5GHz band, the range will be reduced certainly.

Explain that last part? 5.0Ghz has reduced range? And if so how much? Honestly I don't need a ton of range. I need good solid reliability with about a 50ft range, 100 would be pushing it to the absolute limit and I could do without it.

And if this is my solution should I just go with the Linksys WRT610N or are there any other dual band routers I should consider?

Hey tyreck... I got the same exact problem. i got an HP DV7T with the Intel 5100 N card and the D-Link 655 router. I had a linksys Wireless G and was getting always 58Mbps and got the 655 b/c of 300 but I'm maxing out at only 65Mbps...
I've tried tweaking as well but no luck...
    Any updates?

Okay I figured something out. I changed the channel from the default one 6 to 11 and now i'm getting 120-150. Give that a try under manual wireless setup.
uncheck "Enable Auto-Channel Scan" and try a different channel. I tried 11 1st and now i'm up there > 110Mbps.
    Wu Hu!!!

ok this sux again. I upgraded the firmware to the latest 1.20 on the dir-655 and now I'm back down to 65Mbps as well... i really didn't need to buy this router for $100 when my $29 linksys G was always getting 54Mbps constant. now I'm pissed.

i read somewhere that N speeds are only achivable with no security features enabled, however i cant for the life of me remember where i read it. disable your security settings for a couple of minutes and test it.

i dont know how old that article was, so updates etc might have sorted this out by now.

Not true. I have the DIR655 running with WPA2 and AES (the most resource intensive security protocals) with the 4965 card; I get 130MB/s connection to the router which has a 100MB/s connection over ethernet. I've gotten download speeds on indvidual files over 10MB/s which is very reasonable. probably more speed to be gained if downloading more files.

so the solution is to replace intel 5100 with 4965?
also, i got 1.1m/s wireless download speed with 10mb/s isp service both from dlink 655 and belkin pre-n.

what kind of internet service can provide 10mb/s download speed?

I tried everything. setting the channel back to Auto, setting to 1, 4, 6, 9, 11 and most of the time I was getting, get this 5.5Mbps. WOW!! 5.5! Wu hu!!
I just left it back on Auto and now hopefully it reads at least 58/65. But I'm noticing now that (in vista) the network icon is loosing the little globe over the network 2 monitors icon in the task bar. Meaing dropping connection to the internet.
I am debating to pick up one of these at Circuit city for $54. the D-link Xtreme N laptop card.
    http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=165022&om_keycode=67
But very un-happy. I might RMA back to newegg since they have a 30 day return policy on this item...

Does anyone know if there is a different brand router that works better with the 5100? I'm curious since I just ordered my laptop with the 5100 and was getting ready to buy the DIR-655.

the problem isnt the router, just 5100 drops signal more often than anything else , yet the speed isnt any faster than a pre-n.

Can someone help me out here?
I have the HP dv7t which has a "PC Card Slots • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot" on the side where the multimedia remote control is stored.
I bougth the D-Link DWA-652 network card today, I plug it into the slot and absolutely nothing happens. No lights on the card light up or nothing even in Vista pops open.
Does this card work with this slot? the card says it requires a 32-bit card bus slot.
Any ideas? I checked if there was something in the BIOS that maybe was disabling the slot but there's nothing in the BIOS. There's no device turn on/off feature.

    TIA....

hey guys, having the same probs as others here. Got a HP laptop dv5t, intel 5100 wireless card, DIR-655 router. I'm pretty sure that I had up to the 130mbps speeds with the old 1.10 version of the router firmware, but i just upgraded to the 1.20 and it seems to max out at 65 mbps. tried changing that setting to 11 as quoted above - didn't help. I'm going to try going back to an older 1.10 or 1.11 version of the D-Link firmware and see if it's the same as what I had. but was just wondering if anyone has already tried that??

I didn't try that but I'm just going to stick with the max speed I'm getting with 65Mbps. I'm not xfering files from computer to another and my internet connection from Earthlink Cable is 10Mbps so It really won't matter.

I would have to buy an add on "N" express card for the HP DV7t not a regular one I found out. I bought the card I mentioned above from Circuity city and HP couldn't understand why it wouldn't work. Finally someone said oh, that's the old PCMCIA (or whatever teh correct letters are) card and not the 'new' express add on cards. They are not backwards compatible so i had to return it. They only N express cards are > $100 and I don't think I'm gonna pay that when it was the same cost as the router.
I'm fine... for now till I move into a house....

Ok, played around a little more, now i'm on V1.21 of the DIR-655 firmware (the beta version), which changes the 20/40MHz setting, and the Intel wireless card on my dv5t has the first setting as Auto (not 20MHz) and it seems to work - finally got rid of that 65mbps on Task Manager - now it's up to 150 mbps. well that's waht it says. file transfers from my NAS are faster - up around 7MB/s sustained. anyway don't know if that's exactly what fixed it, but does seem to be pretty good now so i'm not touching it! Hope taht helps anyone else who might be in the same situation as me and others in this thread. oh also the channel setting on the router is still set to auto, not 11, if that helps. good luck!

I've been searching forums for days and finally I found the exact problem I am having - Intel 5100 WiFi that will only go 65mbps on a D-Link DIR655 router! I was reluctant to upgrade the router firmware to 1.21 from 1.20 because some routers will not allow you to go back to versions older than the current one. But if you look quickly, the adapter status says 130mbps for about 2 seconds, then consistently changes to 65 and stays there.

This WiFi adapter came in a Dell 1537 laptop I bought for my daughter so it's not practical to change it for something else. I have 2 other Vista computers that connect at 130mbps so I assumed this was an adapter problem. I tried all the things mentioned in these posts (and others) to no avail, even turning router security completely off. I will be upgrading my router this evening! THANKS! :) I will post again on whether this resolved my problem as well.

YES! Upgrading the DIR655 to firmware 1.21 now allows the Intel 5100 to connect at 150mbps. (I did have to reset a bunch of the advanced settings I had messed with in Device Manager.) Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. :)

I will pass this on to Dell when (if) they call back. :D

It seems late, but if you came here perhaps this could help you. My installation works at 150 mb/s with this configuration:
    1. Toshiba Notebook with Intel 5100 agn - DLink DIR-655 router;
    2. Intel 5100 driver ADVANCED properties (you should access through Device Manager):
[I've just pointed items relevant for speed]

-- 802.11n Channel width for band 2.4: AUTO
    -- 802.11n Mode: ENABLED
    -- Fat channel Intolerant: DISABLED
-- Mixed mode Protection: RTS/CTS Enabled
    -- Roamming agressiveness: Highest
    -- Throughput Enhancement: Enabled
    -- Transmitt power: Highest
    -- Wireless mode: 802.11 b/g

    3. DIR-655 Wireless properties:
    -- 802.11 mode: Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g
-- Enable Channel Auto Scan: Checked
    -- Transmission rate: Best (automatic)
    -- Channel width: 20/40 Mhz
-- Security mode: use WPA Personal
    -- WPA type: Auto (WPA/WPA2)
-- Cipher type: TKIP and AES

You should setup the router first, then hard reboot.
After, setup INTEL 5100 properties, then reboot.
You should achieve 150 Mb/s copnstant speed (it's the speed limit for Intel)
    Good luck!

I have a new DIR-655 and an FX7811 like the OP. Mine was stuck on 54g and wasn't registering as N at all. What worked was changing using WPA2 in AES only mode. It's pegged at 150 now.

This was a great help, as I just bought this router. Thanks for the firmware tip. 150Mbps working now.

I just stumbled on this thread as I was having the exact same problem with a Dell Studio 1537 I was setting up today. Many thanks for the tip, I'm up to 150Mbps now also. Great work.

    Hi,

I tried these settings, but could not get more than 25mbps [ 2.8 MBps ].
    I've intel 5100 in my HP DV5.
Tried almost all solutions, but in vain.

    WiFi Router : LinkSys WRT160N
    Firmware : DD-WRT v24-sp2 (02/18/09) std - build 11650M NEWD Eko

I've also two pcs connected with the router via Linksys WMP300N adapters.
and I'm getting 270 mbps [ almost 24 MBps ] between the two pcs. But when I try to transfer some files from / to my DV5, it slows down.

If I see the wireless status on my laptop, it show 100% signals and connection speed 135 mbps. One more thing, when I look at the web interface of the router, it shown connection speed 270 mbps.

    Please help me out here.

    Thanks in advance.

This is inaccurate. I have the 4965agn and a D-link DIR-855 and attain 300Mbps (see attached).

But I'm unable to even connect @ 150 mbps, whereas my desktop pcs are connected at 300 mbps.

    I'm losing it now :(
