    Hello,

I just went out and bought a D-link DIR-655. I came home and hooked it up and was online in about 10 minutes. Everything is working great just have a couple questions.

I have two computers. First is a Dell D820 and I have a Linksys wireless N USB adapter connected to it (WUSB600N). That computer is connected to the network at 270mbps (Sometimes drops to 240mbps but goes back up) which i am totally happy with. I am about 40 feet away and its through 2-3 walls.

The other laptop is a custom built one (specs in sig) It has an Intel PRO Wireless 4965AGN built in. The thing with this laptop is that it only connects at 130mbps. This laptop is about 10 feet away and only one wall in between. I was wondering why this is? Why does one notebook get 270 and the other only 130?

Other than that it is a great router and the 1000mbps LAN is a nice feature =)

Any help or information is appreciated...Thanks

You could check if both thee router and the Intel card are transmitting at full power, but I think is just a question of compatibility. If I'm not mistaken both, D-Link and Linksys uses Atheros chipset, so good synergy.

I checked they are both transmitting at full power. I guess it is the synergy. Oh well 130Mbps is better then 54Mbps =).

130Mbps is certainly better than 54Mbps, it's higher than the usual 100Mbps Ethernet speed.

I have the same router and love it. Make sure it is running in N-Only mode and not Mixed N/G or any other kind of mixed.

I run my network in G-Only, even though I have a couple of N-capable notebooks. I find that most wireless routers work best when functioning in a single wireless type mode.

Otherwise, I don't really understand why your other computer is only connecting at 130 megabits. Sounds like a compatibility issue or something. It is *somewhat* possible there is serious interference caused by an electrical power source or something. Trace a direct line of site path in your mind between the router antenna's and the laptop's antenna. Consider how it goes through the wall, maybe it is hitting a power outlet or microwave?

Otherwise, enjoy the DIR-655, it is the best router I have EVER used.

EDIT: Also, what security mode (if any) are you running? Anything besides WPA2-AES will kill your performance.

I there is no outlet or microwave in the path. I am running WPA2 Personal AES. I am very happy with it. At almost 130 feet away with maybe 5 or 6 walls in between and I am getting 84 Mbps. VERY HAPPY =)

I've had the same issue. Other threads here appear to indicate Intel 4965agn card can only connect at 300 only with auto switching dual band routers, otherwise at 130 max. DIR-655 operates at 2.4Ghz band only, but at 20/40Mhz channel and can connect at 300 max wiith wi-fi cards. Unfortunately, Intel 4965agn card can only operate at 20Mhz channel, so the connection limitation. Search in that forum for the Intel 4965agn card, and you should get all the info you need.

DIR-655 is a great router, I have one, but since you just bought it, I would just return it and spend a bit more money for an auto switching dual band router to take full advantage of your "n" cards.
