First, let me say I have a few plastic routers at home. The current setup are as follow:
    1. an x86 box setup w/ linux distro as a router.
    2. an ActionTec MI424WR, Intel IXP425 w/ 16MB of flash and 32MB of RAM
    3. Netgear WNR834B-v1, BCM4704 w/ 4MB of flash and 16MB of RAM
both plastic boxes are currently running DD-WRT and use as am AP only. All running on the same 10.x.x.x network. Another purpose for them is to be running as OpenVPN server. One for TCP and another for UDP, because both are running DD-WRT this make the setup simple as copy and paste config with minor modification. I have FiOS as ISP, and when using a plastic box as a router, I can feel that it's somewhat underpowered, hence I built a box for that purpose instead. Changing firmware isn't going to change the setup. Things are OK, but not perfect. OpenVPN works, but not on every client. IE, ipad won't connect to TCP, only UDP and for some reason the routing table is mess up.

Recently I have heard about gargoyle as management interface for OpenWRT. From the sound of it, this make a lot of sense, since the plastic box aren't gonna have much processing power or store, something like management UI can be move out of the box and have those box running more lean.

So, anyone have switch from DD-WRT? What is your experience? Would switching to Gargoyle better? Or is there anything else better? I have heard of TOMATO, but the support list is quite short. But please do keep in mind about my specific usage, if it can't do OpenVPN well, then it's as good as no use to me.

Thx in advance, I know this isn't a normal setup.

Gargoyle is lighter and in my opinion better (see sticky for a comparison).
In case of a router with 16MB RAM that may be important.

Support for OpenVPN that's been added to Gargoyle is not something you can benefit from though- you'd need a AR71xx based router with no less than 32MB RAM.

I wish I could just put the 1GB/2GB memory stick I have lying around everytime I upgrade my system and put it in those plastic box and be done w/ it.
