I just ordered a HP HDX 16t laptop and I think it is time for wireless at out place lol. I have pretty much narrowed my choice down to the D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router DIR-655. I am basically looking for some feed back to find out if this is too much or too little and if you think this is a decent router. This is new to me so pardon the newbie language. Here is my situation…

    1. There will be multiple devices hooked up to it at any given time. A pocket pc phone, 2 laptops, and a printer.
    2. I have a Canon MP830 all-in-one printer that does not have networking capabilities that I would like to use with this router.
    3. We live in an apartment complex to security in important to me.
    4. Would I need the dual band version of this router?
    5. Will there be any troubles if this is hooked up to our Vonage router?

Any other input would be great.

It's an awesome router. Picked one up a couple months ago for <$100 CDN. There is a USB port which you can connect the printer to on the router, thus being able to network it. Security is excellent, sign up to the D-Link forum for links to firmware updates and specific tips to your model. You should have no problems with the Vonage router.

For the dual band, what type of connections do you plan on having? IMO it's not necessary for the cost.

The USB port isnt really printer sharing since the switching is a bit of a pain. IMO a cheap print server does the job much more elegantly. If there is alot of wifi in your vicinity you should consider the dual band. The DIR-825 is a good choice. The range is not as good but if you are in an apartment the pros should outweight the cons.

I may expand my connections in the future but right now there will be 1 laptop using it most of the time, sometimes 2 laptops, and every once in a great while a windows mobile smart phone.

    Thanks!

I've been using this router for about 8 months without any significant problems. I've had to reboot the router maybe 3 times over the 8 months.

It was easy to set-up and install. I have a desktop pc, 2 notebooks, hp laser printer, and a G4 connected to it. I have the WPA2 encryption on, which was easy to do and provides excellent security for the network.

Don't know about compatibility with Vonage.

It just works. No complaints. I would recommend it.

The D-link is an excellent router just about the fastest you can get. My dad bought one for the house a few months back and it has been great for him. He as 3 laptops on it both Mac and PC works perfectly.

I have one in my dorm it works great very easy to set up and connect to. It also has good range i can use it out in the lobby which is about 100ft away through brick walls.

I'd be careful about which version of the DIR-655 you get. The A2 and A3 seem to be excellent, and most people's reviews are based on it. The A4 had given me and other friends absolutely nothing but trouble and I've since RMA'ed it. Firmware upgrades/downgrades did not help.

It wasn't as good as everyone hyped it up to be but it is a capable router. I have gone through 2 of these before settling on a DGL 4500, which I find to be significantly better in terms of range.
