first ill run you through my setup (pic below)

    - The blue cable is the ethernet cable that came with the router which connects the modem to the router

    - The grey cable is the USB cable that connects the PC to the modem
(note: the end of the plug which connects to the modem does not fit any sockets in the D-Link router)

Its all plugged in ok, but when I go to the address http://192.168.0.1/ to start the setup wizard, I get this error on the webpage 'The page cannot be displayed'.

In the book it has the
    PC --> Router
    Modem --> Router
(that is the modem has no connection directly to the computer... but this is imposible for me since i have a USB connection between modem and PC which is impossible to connect to the router, no plug socket for it)

I was thinking maybe a connection, PC --> router, with another ethernet cable could fix it... but i tried that and it stopped my internet from working at all

im sure theres a way to work around this becuase the modem i have is common (black Motorola from optus)

Yup connect you PC directly to the router via a ethernet cable to change the cofig of the router.

    shouldn't it go:

    Mdem > router > PC?

you may need a driver if you connect with USB... try to use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to the pc. dont use BOTH ETHERNET AND USB at the same time

try to avoid USB as it is tend to be troublesome for this kind of application.

err... does the router comes with a CD?

yeah it does, but there is no installation on it...

    all there is:
    - Instalation guide (pdf file)
    - Quick install guide (pdf file)

edit: when i had the ethernet cable from PC--> router there was no internet at all (with and without the modem plugged in)

    This is correct.
You might need to power cycle everything.
    Turn off everything.
Then turn on the modem and Router.
Once all the connection lights are set,
    Turn on the PC.
Remember if you have cable u need to clone the MAC Address.
And if you have DSL u need to setup ur Username and password.

You are not suppose to use both usb or cat5 on the modem, either or. The prefered method is using cat5 cable to connect the modem to the router (wan/internet). If you can not connect to the admin, verify that you are connecting to the correct ip, should be the gateway address. If you can not reset the modem to factory by holding the reset in for 10 sec.

Also check your firewall, make sure you have a rule to allow local traffic (subnet).

If your computer does not have an ethernet connection you need to add in a PCI card or a USB of some sort. Then you need to plug in the D-link modem to your PC.

i took the ethernet cable out of the modem and connected PC --> WAN port on router

i checked my gateway adress and tried connecting with that but to no success. no problems with firewalls have them all turned off

yea, what the 2 above me said
you can't have both of them connected to the pc >> conflict!!!!

it should go modem >> router >> pc, via ethernet

And if I can remember correctly, isn't USB's transfer speeds slower than Ethernet?

Depends on if the USB connection is 2.0 or 1.1, 1.1 yes, 2.0 negligible but I would rather opt for the ethernet connection.
