Need to Network existing desktop (windows ME) working well with SBC/Yahoo
dsl service with new laptop (XP, with Intel Pro/wireless 2200 Internal wireless
802.11 b/g 54mbps card in it) Existing desktop has Zone Alarms free firewall
installed on it. Want destop hardwired to new router and laptop wireless.
    1) Install new router cd to desktop and hard wire it to router and get working.
    2) Install dsl cd to laptop
    3) Install router cd to laptop
    4) Use Network wizard in Desktop to create the network.
I suspect i am missing a step or two or the order i do this is all wrong.
Your thoughts and changes will be appreciated.
    Thanks

are you trying to connect the desktop to the notebook or are you trying to get internet access for both through the same router or both?

    You shouldn't need step 2 or 3.

    You shouldn't even need 1...

Basically it needs to be like that:

    (1) Connect DSL modem to router WAN port

    (2) Connect router to desktop, set compatible IP address (either dynamically from the router DHCP server or statically). Probably need to read the router's manual to see what IP range and subnet masks it uses and whether DHCP is enabled by default

    (3) Login to router's web interface and configure the DSL settings (provider, user name, password). This should make the router responsible for dialing and maintaining a connection.

    (4) Configure router's wireless settings to your choice (set SSID name, channels, encryption if desired, etc). Reading the router manual is again required to see what can be done and how. Also, if these terms mean nothing to you, a very good guide by Nickspohn in one of the sticky threads at the top of this forum will help you.

    (5) Set up the IP of the laptop (again, either a static IP or a dynamic one from the router's DHCP server) and make sure everything works.

Basically, the computers need to have the router's IP as their gateway and DNS server, they should have unique IPs in the same range (usually 192.168.x.something and 255.255.255.0 subnet mask).

Another point that I want to make - you DO NOT need to install the DSL software on any of the computers. In fact you probably need to NOT have it installed - it will only confuse Windows and mess up the network settings. The router will manage the internet connection, the computers only need to know the router.
