    Cordless Phone kills Wireless Network??

    Help - New to this....have a wireless network via a GNET modem/router (model GBB0074). Works well, until I pick up the cordless phone, which apparently uses the same bandwith (2.4 GHz).

    When the cordless phone is used, the wireless network disappears and the connection is lost. I have tried changing all of the modem/router channels from 1 to 11, with no success.

    Is there anything else I can do?

    Yep, most cordless phones do share the same 2.4GHz bandwidth as wifi. Many phones use spread spectrum and cover many channels, though I personally haven't yet seen one that uses the entire spectrum (which doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just that I haven't yet seen it). Generally, they tend to use the lower channels so I have had the most luck setting a wireless network to use channel 11. Just so you know, a wifi network takes a lot of bandwith and expands across two channels in each direction, so a network set to channel 6 actually uses the bandwidth assigned to channels 4 - 8. Setting to channel 11 uses channels 9 and above and extends into the "buffer" at the top of the spectrum.

    Anyway, I'd try using channel 11 again and give it one more chance. If it really doesn't work, then there really isn't anything you can do except to replace the phone.

    Also, be aware that microwaves can interfere with the 2.4GHz channel too. While testing the phone, don't do it in the kitchen with the microwave running.

    Some router manufacturers also recommend not to place the phone (base?) in close proximity to the router. Have you tried setting up the phone in a different room than the router or your notebook?

    I have a 2.4 cordless at home 2, I am use channel 11 for my wireless between two computers ( 1 upstairs, 1 down ) , even when my sis carries the phone all around the house, my wireless have no pro. at all, so I guess change to ch 11 could help.

    just my 2 cents.

    Had the the same prob here, as well. Changed my router channel from 6 to 11. No problems for the past 2 weeks, since I made the change.

    if you get another phone on a different frequency (i.e. a 900Mhz or 5.8Ghz), you won't have the interference.

    The channel is changed as a setting on the wireless AP/Router

    Going to a 5.8GHz phone will solve the problem (ASSUMING that the problem is really interference from your phone).

    You change the channel by going to the configuration utility for your router/access point. Generally you open a browser and enter the IP address for your router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). See your manual for details (most are available online at the manufacturer's site if you didn't keep it). The login is usually some combination of "admin" and/or blank for the user name and password (no user name and admin for the p/w, or admin for the user name and no password, or admin for both). Again, see the manual if those don't work.
